Be sure to check your local library ebook lending options.

I like the smaller size of the Kindles but I find the larger screen on my i-pad to be easier to read.
With the Kindle app you can easily enlarge the font, colour etc. and still get a reasonable amount of text on the screen. I believe you mentioned having to enlarge the text on your computer so the i-pad is probably your best option.

I have an older Kindle that I am happy with, I think it's still sold as the "Kindle keyboard". You can make the font size as large as you like and the screen is the "e-ink" display and not a tablet screen which is much closer to reading real paper.

Kindle screens are easier on the eyes, and the battery life is phenomenal. But I use my Android tablet most of the time with the Kindle app. Then I only have to deal with one device and have all the other stuff I use the tablet for at hand.

Each has advantages.

Kindles are very thin, very light, and simulates paper very well. The battery lasts for weeks at a time, not hours. The soft glow of the lighting is also very good for reading at night.

I will read on a Tablet or from my desk or phone in a pinch, but the Kindle really rocks.

Thanks to all of you for taking the time to respond. I now have much more information to make an intelligent decision about this purchase. I will post back once I decide. Appreciate all of you.

I bought the Ipad Pro. I really like it for my reading. I downloaded the Kindle app and am using the free trial of Kindle unlimited.

I am thinking of just paying for the books I download. Do they stay on your I pad forever and use up memory??

Thanks

I have a kindle.
The the kindle format books I buy from Amazon are stored there. Every now and then I remove them from my kindle but can go back later and reload them from Amazon.

Earlier in this thread I noted that I like my gen 1 Kindle Paperwhite. Later models of the Kindle have better resolution, contrast, and backlights. All good, but what I'm really holding out for is a Kindle with a USB-C connector. I'm sick and tired of the micro USB connector.

You can download and delete whenever you want, although compared to an iPad Pro, the memory usage is minimal. Do some research on getting books from the library. I haven't even bought a kindle book in a year because you can get placed on a waiting list for books. The just show up. I'm on the list for the new book on Grant and it isn't even out yet.

Magazines are great on the iPad too. I'm reading The Economist for free from the library. It's a pricey subscription. (too lefty sometimes, but good writing).

I have a couple of hundred books from Amazon in my Kindle account. I have an original Kindle but seldom use it, preferring the iPad with Kindle app.

I notice that while my entire library is listed, some of the ones I have not accessed in a while are not actually loaded ready to go. The ones which are have a small check mark on the lower right. The others do not. When I click on one that does not, it reloads it, very quickly, from the cloud or something, just like it would for a new purchase.

I really like my ipad mini, it's about the size of a book and easy to hold with one hand and can zoom in, excellent backlighting and battery life, and words are plenty big enough if you turn it sideways. The regular ipad you really need to rest on something or hold with both hands.

Last question. Kindle Unlimited vs. pick the books I want to read from Amazon??? I read all kinds of stuff including professional stuff in my field, also things like collected works of Churchill, accounts of World War Two, and pulp fiction. I will certainly take advantage of my Library, as much as I can. I also have access to the University system online for research. I cannot get to the range as much as I would like and this is my other hobby.

Thank you.

One of the features of the original Kindle is a slot for a memory card. I have an 8 GB card in mine. That is a lot of books!

I buy the books I want. Kindle Unlimited wasn’t offered when I got mine in 2007 or so.

Everyone in my family and others likely to give me a gift know that Amazon gift cards are good as gold, and much more appreciated than anything else.

Did you know there is the 9 volume biography of Churchill available for Kindle? https://winstonchurchill.hills.../official-biography/

another good source of books is your local library.
I downloaded the Overdrive app on to my older kindle. That lets you borrow any book they have for 14 days, then it is automatically removed or if you finish earlier you can return. No late fees etc.

I am going to our local library tomorrow and will look into the Overdrive App. I was a library card holder before the digital age and gave up on the local library because of terrible selection. There is a brand new huge library built after Katrina destroyed the other one and did not even think of downloading books from them.

I will let you know how that works.

Kindle Voyage. It has the paper white screen along with the option of swiping to change the page or actually pushing a “button.” I’m on my 3rd Kindle and am very impressed with them.
