I spend a good deal of time reading and have no trouble reading the print on Sig Forum on my computer with Google Chrome enlarged text size of 150 percent. Single spaced typing for me at times is difficult to discern. I find it very difficult now to read many books in print, and would like other options. I am trying to find the most viable option for myself, that has a wide selection of titles. I know the names are Kindle, Nook, Ipad and tablet but have no idea as to what might be best. Thank you in advance.

I have an original Kindle. It is pretty good but by current standards slow. The original accepts memory cards to expand the capacity. I have the Kindle service on my laptop, iPhone 4s and iPad. The 4s is outdated, but the iPad is excellent. I use that nearly all the time. It is useful for other internet activities as well, all the apps one uses, etc. I run through battery capacity about twice a day. Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me. When you had the votes, we did things your way. Now, we have the votes and you will be doing things our way. This lesson in political reality from Lyndon B. Johnson "Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." - Justice Janice Rogers Brown

Just Hanging Around |
I can't speak to the others, but I've had an iPad for about 5 years, and I haven't bought a paper book since. I'm betting they are all about the same, and you can get a Kindle app for the iPad. You can adjust the brightness, font, and font size. You can have a black background with white print, or a white background with black print. You can place bookmarks so you don't lose your place, and with my iPad and iPhone synched, I can open either one and be right where I left off. They're great if you like to read in bed, and not disturb your spouse. I love reading with the iPad. I would hate to give it up.

Love my kindle, supposed to be able to have about 2500 books on it, have approx 300. It's an older one, if I replace it will probably get a paperwhite one next time. Only because the paper white is a bit easier for outside, and has a backlight for nighttime.

Unapologetic Old School Curmudgeon |
I have a kindle paperwhite and love it. I'm a big reader, and my wife loves it because there aren't books all over the house. Battery life is awesome, with Wi-Fi turned off it lasts weeks. No eye strain, nice and light to carry, etc. Don't weep for the stupid, or you will be crying all day

If you have a Best Buy near you, I would go and check out the various models. Rotndad karma'd me a Kindle "keyboard" back before Christmas but I ended up getting a Kindle "Paperwhite" under the tree. I gave the Kindle Tony sent me to my mom and now she uses it all the time. She is part of a book club at church and often times would get bigger books w/ bigger print which can be difficult to hold. The kindles can enlarge the print so she no longer worries about that. Now, enlarging the print means you have to "turn" the page more often. The kindle keyboard is nice for this because there are buttons on each side right where your fingers rest to go forward or backwards by page. Compare this to my Kindle Paperwhite which is touchscreen and I have to move a finger onto the screen each time, the kindle keyboard has the advantage, IMO. This is why I suggest checking out a floor model somewhere (I think Walmart even has them) so you can mess around w/ the print size, turning the pages, and checking out the difference between the back-lit vs. non back-lit where you can't read in the dark. I get all our books from Amazon or check to see if the same ones are offered from the library. And interestingly enough, when I get the book from the library, it directs me to Amazon to download it for the 2 week lease. ETA: Looks like the Kindle Voyage is the best of both worlds w/ the Pagepress

Get Off My Lawn |
After buying a Kindle Paperwhite, my reading habits vastly improved, I'll read over a dozen books a year rather than 2-3. In the past, reading a book in bed was not comfortable, but the Kindle changed that. By far my favorite electronic portable device. We used Color Nooks (which did a great job and were mostly epub format) until after four years the batteries began to die. Got where they would only hold about a day's charge. I priced replacement batteries and unlike most things electronic, the Nook batteries are still around 50-60 bucks new. Not gonna happen. We have been using ipads since. They do a great job. If I could make one suggestion- if it is only going to be used as a reader, get one of the older higher-capacity ipad models (a Gen 1, II, etc). I found two 64 GB early model ipads (they won't run the latest system but they don't need to). Even found one for $13 bucks that needed to be restored. Worked perfectly after clearing it and restore. You load any books you want to read into ibooks and they are loaded via itunes. Reason I mention this is that many of these models are generally lighter and easier to hold in your hand for extended time than the current full-size models.

I have had several iPads and find them very easy to use and flexible, especially as to font size. Screen brightness is also vert adjustable, and I can cruise the internet on them.

Delusions of Adequacy |
my only complaint about the paperwhite is that I can change font size in the books, but not on the menu screens. Have to use a magnifier on them. I have my own style of humor. I call it Snarkasm.

Kindle Voyage. This model not only has the paperwhite advantage but allows you to press an actual key to change the pages (you can still swipe if you like). __________________________

If you are planning to be outdoors reading at all then I'll second the Kindle Voyage as tops. If you primarily read indoors where glare is not an issue than any cheap tablet will do. The Kindles do really rock. Calibre is a great app for collecting your books, translating them to and from different formats, and loading to your Kindle. Cheers~

I used to use an iPad (which I no longer have), and now use a Kindle. The one thing I would caution about using an iPad is if you check out library books that use DRM to enforce the checkout time limit. The Kindle app will not work for that, you need a real Kindle to check out a book as a "Kindle Book". You can, however, install the Library system's app (usually Overdrive) on the iPad, and check out the books as ePub books. The difference is, at least at my library, is there is a much bigger selection of books in the Kindle format than the ePub format.

Baroque Bloke |
I've used my older Kindle (the first "Paper White" model) for several years, and love it. A lot better than buying more bookshelves (and finding space for them). And from the comfort of my home, I can borrow e-books from my local library. A big advantage of the Kindle is that its e-ink display doesn't wash out in bright light – even direct sunlight. And a battery charge is good for several days of use. Serious about crackers
