We had to put Sophie, our 8 yr old German Shorthair, to sleep this morning. Last week she had a problem eating, we took her to the vet who said it was her jaw and common in dogs her age. They gave her a shot and steroid pills. She got better the day and was back to her old self harassing squirrels, chipmunks and birds in the yard. I fed her yesterday and she ate a little more slowly. She was in the yard while I cut the grass and everything seemed ok at but later I tried to give her some cut up grilled chicken because she wasn’t allowed hard treats. She couldn’t eat it. I hoped she had just aggravated her jaw again.

This morning when I got up she didn’t carry on to get out of her crate like she normally does. When I let her out her right eye was rolled back and she was drooling some blood. She couldn’t eat or drink so I woke my wife and 19 yr old son and we took her to the emergency vet clinic. They were in no hurry to help her and told us to wait in the car. I decided instead to take her to our regular vet who would be opening soon. My son also noticed a lump on the side of her face.

The vet saw her face, felt the lump and knew it was a tumor and it was pushing on her eye. There was nothing that could be done and Sophie was suffering. I made the only decision I could to end her pain. It must have been very aggressive cancer for it to happen as fast it did. My son and I were both with her when she passed on. Matthew is devastated, he lover her so much. She was the best dog we’ve ever had the pleasure of loving. I’m sure she’s running the fields above now. I miss her so much. I love you Sophie and I will never forget you.

Sorry for your loss and I feel your pain.

I hope you heal your heart.

I healed by getting 2 more pup’s but the pain never goes completely away.

Be well.

My deepest condolences for the loss of your Sophie. Saying goodbye to a life-long pet is the hardest thing I've ever had to do in my life.

So sorry - my girl (GSP/Blue Tick mix) is approaching 13 and has a few lumps/tumors on her back. We decided not to do surgery/chemo given her age and the failure rate of these procedures/processes with older dogs. You made the right call.

Cherish the memories.
