Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said that "every semi-automatic weapon used in the terrorist attack last Friday will be banned." She said that includes "military-style" semi-automatic firearms and high-capacity magazines.

Ardern said a sales ban was effective immediately to prevent stockpiling and would be followed by a complete ban on the weapons after new laws are rushed through.

The ban includes any semi-automatic guns or shotguns that are capable of being used with a detachable magazine that holds more than five rounds. It also extends to accessories used to convert guns into what the government called "military-style" weapons.

Many different types of firearms, from pistols to rifles and shotguns, can be semi-automatic. Semi-automatic refers to a firearm's ability to self-load, not only firing a bullet with each trigger pull, but also reloading and making the firearm capable of firing again.

New Zealand currently has the lowest murder rate it's had in 40 years, so yes, let's ban firearms and punish every law abiding citizen in that country for the actions of one person cause that makes sense.

I live half away around the world, but this action by this adolescent infuriates me. I'd hope that the gun owners in New Zealand would tell her and the government to bugger off, but they'll likely just capitulate like they did in Australia.

Ms. Ardern has shown herself to be a fascist, pushing through rushed, ill considered laws on the heels of a tragedy, essentially her own little Reichstag Fire, to strip civil rights from 4.8 million people, all because one lunatic went off the rails.

Fear a politician who is willing to exploit tragedy and emotion to remove civil rights.

Also fear a politician who will tell you to your face that although the legislature has passed a mechanism for a permit (the Class E license) not to bother applying for one because you won't get it. Standards and laws mean nothing. Emotion rules. Apparently, the good people of New Zealand don't need a legislature any more, as Ms. Ardern has it all covered and knows what's best.

Weep for a people who give up their civil and sovereign legislative rights without a fight.

This emotional, irrational, knee-jerk reaction is exactly why the Founders set up our government the way they did. A House chamber of directly elected representatives where you would expect this kind of pandering nonsense. Then a Senate with senators chosen by state legislatures to look out for the interests of the states and ensure that nonsense from the House gets heavily scrutinized before being sent to a president chosen by electors to either sign or veto.

The dems are pushing for mob rule of exactly this kind. They are praising NZ effusively today while they chip away at the Electoral College and move another step closer to mob rule. They better be careful of what they wish for - 2 wolves and a sheep voting on what's for dinner doesn't usually work out so well for the sheep. Bernie's response above is a prime example.

From what I heard of the shooters manifesto he knew his actions would result in this type of division and reaction. So essentially a crazy guy is setting national policy in New Zealand. Bravo

Rumor is that PM Ardern herself voted against similar bans the last time they were introduced in 2017.
