Amazon quit asking me for reviews after they begged me repeatedly for a review of the warranty I bought with a product. They didn’t want me to review the product, just the warranty. I guess they didn’t appreciate my sarcasm, because they haven’t me to review anything else.

First thing I do when I'm shopping online is check the 5 star and 1 star reviews. Helpful when comparing products. Those reviews come from somewhere. That said, I don't do reviews that often and most requests for such go ignored.

I do that as well, but with a grain of salt.

Some of the 5 star reviews are completely bogus, posted by shills.

Some (most?) of the 1 star reviews are from mouth-breathing toothless morons that have no idea how to use or what to expect from that product.

I do like to see the total of 5 and 4 star reviews over 85% and tend to avoid products with fewer than 100 reviews if there's another brand/model that gets more and better reviews.

Not fool proof, but helps to weed out the real losers.



Be careful when following the masses. Sometimes the M is silent.

I do the same; check the number of 5-star vs 1-star, and read what is written if too many 1-star reviews! I have changed my mind about a purchase more than once over those reviews, so they DO matter... I just don't want to write one for every bloody thing I buy! Some stuff, like ink pens work; no need to review them IMHO...

When the dentist shoves an Ipad in front of you to rate your service it is time to leave. Locally I ask around. The stars mean nothing, the content maybe. The negative comments often dominate since people like to complain. Many of the reviews are bought and paid for, particularly on Amazon.
