I am figuring that out myself. But my wife is a little pissy that I am retiring at 56.5. Although I suppose it would be more accurate to say retiring from Corrections. I get paid 60% of my salary wich means I need to make up the differance or get a frugal budget. My wife is 2 years younger and has to work for 8 more years!!

I was blessed by God to retire at 55 but fortunately or unfortunately depending on your point of view I didn't have a wife to answer too :-) I took a pay cut of course but shortly after retirement I was able to pay off my house and I had already paid off all my other debt so I was able to live comfortably off my retirement income. If you need to supplement your income I would encourage you to find another job where you'll be happy. A friend of mine delivers car parts, he's provided a company car and he picks up parts from a warehouse and delivers them to various shops in the area. He's out on the road all day so no manager to annoy him, he's in and out of the shop just long enough to deliver the parts so very little interaction with customers or the public and he seems to be content.

I knew an old retired fart that picked up and delivered crippled and elderly patients for the hospital.

Two weeks after he started, a frequent customer brought him a gallon plastic jar with a label on it that read
" GRATUITIES"
with five dollars in it.

Sometimes he'd take home $30.00 extra.

He might drive 50 miles in one day then 200 the next.

A few customers would change their appts. To insure that he would be their driver.

Erratic hours were the norm.
Four hours one day. 7 1/2 the next.

Safety, Situational Awareness and proficiency.

I was in the car business for 21 years. When I retired I didn't want to continue selling for a dealer. I worked for an independent leasing company which was owned by an insurance company.

The price was marked, no negotiation, and no trade-ins. It was salary, retirement, benefits, 8-5, weekends off, etc.

I am now working for a dealer and I drive cars all over. I do dealer trades, pick up cars at auctions, deliver to customers, etc. I make minimum wage plus lunch and really enjoy it. If I am doing something else, I tell them thanks, but can't go.

I just retired from working a small, friendly shop for about 8 years. A few people sucked, most were pretty easy to deal with. People selling their guns were often disappointed that they couldn't get full retail back out of them. They wouldn't expect a car dealership to by back their car at full retail after 2 years, but...

As far as bad vibes go, you have an absolute right to deny a sale to anyone for any reason.

I think it would be easier with a smaller store.
Our guns come in on pallets!! Big corperation with more rules than I can remember all at once.

Both of my store managers have told me that they support any decision I make in that regard. So that is nice to know.

And we dont take trades so that is one less hassle!!

I retired after forty seven years full time in GM dealership parts departments but continued to work part time in Harley Davidson dealership parts as I had since 1999. Finally in 2022 between rising gas prices (65 mile commute in a Wrangler) and a dealer ownership change (now corporate owned) I quit. Also the same year I had been helping a friend at his LGS, he was partially disabled and passed in early 2022 so by June I had a lot of time on my hands.

As I had turned down offers to come back in automotive part time (wanted nothing to do with dealerships anymore) and I couldn’t see myself at Home Depot/Lowe’s/Walmart and so on I applied at a big box sporting goods store and the only other LGS in my town. Surprisingly I got called by both places the same day. While the chain store would have offered more money it wasn’t that Much more. And their main focus was lower priced guns. I took the LGS offer and except for the self inflicted damages to my wallet it’s great. Sure we have the occasional off the wall customer, who doesn’t in any business?

Soon you will have met every wing nut within five counties.

At some point you will be convinced that you are the only sane person in the entire gun culture.

If they do start taking trade-ins, leave.

Well, I decided to end my employment. I didn't mind the job so much. Although the amount of shelf stocking was getting old. (ie 4 hours of stocking lures).

The primary reason is the hours have been kicking my ass. 60 hours a week proved to be too much for me. I am looking forward to the summer!

Store is open now and it is nuts. Crazy busy, fast paced and stressful. 3 people selling 3 different firearms using 2 computers and 1 till.

Dont get me started on all the comments that I have already heard!!!

I went through all of that when Cabela's opened in Huntsville, AL back around 2015. Back-breaking work, especially the pallets of ammo, working in other departments that I hated, like fishing (the variety of fishing lures they carried that had to be put on just the right hook was mind-boggling), then dealing with all of the idiots at the gun counter once the store opened to the public. Just a few months of dealing with the public and I was done with it!

Gotcha. We don't have those down here where I live... or at least I'm not aware of any. Around here is Tractor Supply Company or the local county Co-ops...

The “other department” thing is what turned me off to the chain store.

It was bad enough to have to deal with the whole realm of sporting goods. Camping, well roughing it to me is staying in a Motel 6. Fishing, don’t think using M-80’s to get the fish is an approved method, I assume the DNR would frown upon that. Archery, well I’ve watched Errol Flynn in Robin Hood many times if that qualifies me together with a bunch of Westerns. Golf, same answer I gave when invited to company golf outings, what caliber do you use on the ball?

That was the biggest thing for me also, especially on evenings when I was there until closing. ALL employees had to stay until every department was cleaned up and ready for opening next morning, no exceptions! That included cleaning all the fingerprints off of the miles of glass display cabinets that people had their grubby fingers on all day long. There was always the one slacker that did the absolute minimum when everyone else was busting their butt. If you got finished, you had to go help another department, which is where things got even worse!

The other big problem for me was some of their corporate rules, especially tardiness. If you clocked in even 1 minute late, you got written up; 3 times and you're fired! I always left the house WAY ahead of time to ensure I was there at least 15 minutes, but in my area there were only 2 viable ways to get to the store. One day there was a bad wreck that totally clogged up my main way of going, so I backtracked to the other, only to find that everyone else had the same idea. I clocked in 2 minutes late, and there was nothing I could do about it! The next time a few months later I blew a leak in my radiator and overheated. To get water back in it and finish driving the rest of the way I had to wait for it to cool down a while. Yep, I was a few minutes late, but I wasn't going to destroy my engine over it. The sad part was I could see the store from where I broke down, but couldn't get there on foot due to 2 high fences with barbed wire on top, otherwise I would have walked the rest of the way.

Oh well, that's 10 years ago now. From what I heard, all of the good employees that helped open the store quit after a few months, many of whom quit good jobs elsewhere to move here for Cabela's. In the past 10 years, I don't think I've even walked into the store more than 3 times max now... one of which was during the last big ammo drought as I knew they usually had piles of the stuff!

I worked behind the gun counter many years ago, it was fun for a while. Bummer you couldn't work 3 days a week.

I had 25 retired guys working for me as shuttle drivers 3 days a week. They all had the same pattern retired from GM, military, Coca-Cola, Frito Lay, electric company after 25 to 30 years. They retired and got bored after 2 years of playing golf they had all the around the house projects done. They decided they wanted a part time job and came to work at the airport 3 days a week. They really like the balance, because they had spending money but still got play golf and have 4 days off.

I have a few SIGs.
