I'd rather be hated for who I am than loved for who I am not

I had reservations about taking the job. Low pay and loss of free time. But I thought it might be fun and I would have an established job and routine when I retire in 350 days! Last 2 months have been filled with back breaking work stocking pallets of firearms and ammo. Also have to help other departments at times.. like stacking bags of chicken shit lol.

Store is open now and it is nuts. Crazy busy, fast paced and stressful. 3 people selling 3 different firearms using 2 computers and 1 till.

Dont get me started on all the comments that I have already heard!!!

I like guns. I like shooting guns. I like working on guns. I even like teaching guns. I do not think I'd like selling guns to the general public. You are a braver and more patient man than I!

First I hope the learning curve makes the job enjoyable for you very soon.

I took p/t work at LGS after getting retired, because I wanted to like my work - and I do. Perhaps it's who I work for or getting to know so many like minded folks. I can tell you it's not the pay Smile

If you are new to retail sales always keep in mind that everyone has an "off" or bad day.

That goes for customers and sales people.

So are you going to stay with it, Ronin?

I once considered working part time selling motorcycles. I was retired and my previous job involved selling so it seemed a good fit. In mentioning it to a friend and fellow motorcyclist he said "Are you crazy? Go hang around the Powersports store and listen to what you'll be dealing with!".

LOL after I did I immediately dropped the idea.

Congrats on your soon to be retirement.

Ammo can get heavy really quick.

Then there is the 'I asked for a box of (357s / a few .38s) and was sold (357 Sig / .38 Super) instead...

I wanted a Glock 45...

doesn't mean you should

At some point it would just become another retail sales job. Not something I would consider fun.
The other negative to me, some people are entirely within the law owning a gun but give me bad vibes and I don't want to be responsible for or connected to in any way.

Congrats on the Retirement!

See, what ya did was ya turned your Hobby into a Job…
This rarely works out for the best. There’s a point that you gotta get out before you hate it. Coupled with the fact that it involves working with the public? That’s got “disaster” written all over it. Wink

Between now and then, try to enjoy it, laugh at the stupid stuff, try and learn something cool every day.

The only way I'd consider doing something similar is if it was a niche shop that specialized in higher-end historical firearms. Similar to Rock Island or Morphy's. (Though those are both auction houses, so not a direct comparison.)

I wouldn't want to deal with Tactical Timmy, Thug Thomas, Reddit Ryan, Kooky Karen, and Fudd Frank all day at a normal local gun shop. That applies to both customers and coworkers. The amount of dumb bullshit I've heard from both sides of the counter at gun shops is mindboggling, and I don't even spend very much time in them as it is!

I couldn’t do it. I’ve seen enough of the general public in gun stores to know that I would not enjoy it.
But congratulations on your retirement.

Low pay, loss of free time and you're unhappy are all reasons to quit and move on to something else that you'll find more enjoyable. I retired in May 2016 and on occasion I thought about going back to work part time but the thought of low pay and loss of my free time I quickly dispatched the idea of going back to work. I love doing what I want to do everyday and not having to answer to anybody. The key to retirement is finding activities you enjoy doing that will replace the 8+ hours you spent at work. I fill my day with home improvement projects, Im involved with several ministries at my church, when weather permits I take day trips on my motorcycle and once or twice a year I take a 2-3 week vacation. Life and retirement is to short to work at a job that takes away your free time, pays you peanuts and a job you don't enjoy.

This... this times 1000. Granted I worked for the Arkansas clan, so YMMV.

Your experience sounds a lot like our local farm supply store's gun counter. 2-3 associates of varying skill/knowledge, 2 computers and one register. Can be quite hectic at times.

A Perpetual Disappointment...

I came in this morning and my boss who is 22 years old told me that he got threatened "I'm gonna kill you!" by phone after he passed along a denied message. sounds like that was the right decision!!!

Found out about a bunch of manufactorer programs for the retail plebes. I may be getting my springfield kuna for cost!!! and also looking into a friends of SIG program!

thanks!!! still have a little under a year for the retirement. But 30 years in corrections seemed like enough. Getting tired and worn out :P

I am figuring that out myself. But my wife is a little pissy that I am retiring at 56.5. Although I suppose it would be more accurate to say retiring from Corrections. I get paid 60% of my salary wich means I need to make up the differance or get a frugal budget. My wife is 2 years younger and has to work for 8 more years!!
