I've had more than one HD/Lowes clerk tell me that losses from theft are very high, so much so that they said it was stupid for the company not to try to stop it. Lots of thieves in the ranks of the general population. As an aside, my personal theory is these are the SAME people who fail to return a wallet or purse stuffed with cash to its owner, keep incorrect change given to them by mistake, and worst of all, flee after accidentally running over someone in their vehicle.

I have no problem with my HD. I push my cart up and ask the lady to key me for Veteran discount, she always thanks me for my service. If I've got heavy items she'll ask if I'd like assistance. My wife is there a lot more than me, garden stuff, and feels the same way.

You can watch me all you want, what you can't do it stop me at the door and go over my receipt. I am nice about it but I am not stopping as I walk out the door for you to double check me. I will let you do it at Sams Club because I agreed to your rules when I joined. Anywhere else, if you think I stole something then call the cops and hope you are right.

I wonder if really really wealthy people ever walk up to the self checkout with their $350.00 sink , hand the watchers $300.00 and just wait for them to git'er done

I like using self checkout as I don't shop for much stuff. To me, my time is more valuable than some shitty idea of "it's not my job to check myself out..." I'd rather waste my time doing something I enjoy than standing in line.

My local Walmart is now doing the whole Costco-style “I need to see your receipt” routine on the way out to almost everyone now. In the past it was very random or not at all but they must have a big shoplifting problem because now that’s being done and even more stuff is now locked up.

Just bought $41 of wire. Clerk had to unlock the cage, grab the wire, walk the item out with me. Couldn't let me take it. I might run out the store with it, don't you know. 62 years young and a police volunteer and not trusted.

Copper wire? If so, that’s not surprising. Thieves are breaking into buildings nowadays to steal copper wires in the walls.

Costco can because it's a condition of membership. Wal-Mart can ask but not demand it.
I'm not going to create a federal case out of it, but the last time that happened I just nodded back in general direction of self-checkout and said "She did as she was helping me out."

They do this occasionally here. I just smile and politely say "no thanks, I’m good" and keep on going.
I try to remember that they are just doing what they were told to do.

I do not go to my HD that often but the self checkout always has gone smoothly. Same lady last couple of times, inputs my veterans discount, thanks me.

The local Walmart is OK, my wife does a monthly run and has been happy to get a cashier the last couple of times. Nobody goes to them, everyone chooses self checkout.

I can't speak to the present day but prior to the self check outs , most of the theft was internal . My wife was a manager at Lowe's and she was over the front end . This was cashiers and cash office among other things . She fought long and hard to get corporate to give her a better angle on the cameras that were above the check outs . The cashiers were thieves and were pretty good at palming money and faking keystrokes on the register . My wife finally got the cameras where she needed them and got extremely good at catching those thieving little bitches .

The Home Depot I shop at has now closed the self service lanes and hired more cashiers. Apparently watching people like a hawk in the self service area was generating a bit of hostility in the honest shoppers and they were shopping elsewhere. Basically sales were tanking and by some miracle some manager figured out more cashiers and insisting a friendly attitude towards every customer was a wiser option. Makes for a very pleasant shopping experience when you are greeted by a smiling cashier.

I've stopped counting.

This chase started over a shoplifter at a Home Depot in North Little Rock. The traffic jam it created caused out kids to be late for dinner at our house.

We went to HD a couple of days ago for some spray paint . My wife tried to ring up with the self checkout . I see her trying to do the debit card and then a CC . No joy . Then a cashier comes over and then a second one . Apparently the card reader was down so she has to move over to a different check out to complete the transaction . The whole time I'm standing off to the side mumbling about how much I hate self checkouts .

There is a brand new Home Depot near my house. They have zero regular checkout lanes. They have the customer service counters, and the self checks. That's it! Silly thing is they have 3-5 employees milling about in the self check area.

Don't even get me started on Kroger!

Just a few years ago when HD started this crap I was forced to use the self checkout.

I'm already not happy about this but when their monitor person walked up and stood about 2 feet away from me it really pissed me off.

She was IN my personal space and certainly not welcomed to do so.

All she did was stare at me.

Ironically this was the same little twit HD employee who shoved a shopping cart towards the cart storage area and ran it into my butt. I dang near almost fell over. Yeah I delayed my departure from HD and got the store manager to listen to me vent about how HD has gone to crap.

Does anyone still have a job anymore? Kids need intro jobs while in high school to learn a few things about how life works and how to treat and be treated by people.

Yep . My wife used to tell me about those kind all of the time . No call - No show . Some would get one paycheck and then disappear . One of them worked one day and then never came back . Imagine trying to make a schedule with employees like that .
