My sister is brilliant, but spellimg has never been her strongest point. Our mom taught English before she taught history. Interestingly, when my sister was little and my mom tried to correct her spelling my sister would get offended that mom was mrssing with her creativity. I never got that-once I had seen a word in print I could usually “see it” in my head when I had to write it.

I am guilty of poor writing. I tend to leave out words as I type along. The spelling and grammar police on my devices often change words and grammar to something even more nonsensical. “That’s what.” - She

My favorite is, "but that's not what we meant" when we start receiving from a $5M/yr supplier what is in the Statement of Work (SOW). My retort is, "well, I am reading the SOW and that's what is it says we're going to get. If you want [what you just said] you will need to do a contract mod and have them re-bid the contract." Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it. About half the population in the US was born after software such as word processors had spell check. The original ones were more like a dictionary. ~1999 the context specific spell checkers with spelling algorithm were developed. As smart phones and tablets were developed they also integrated this technology. Now, the algorithms have learning and for good reason. For example, I'm in oil & gas and the learning allows it to incorporate industry lingo and acronyms rather than flag those words endlessly. The problem is people keep "teaching" the algorithm to spell words incorrectly instead of teaching the algorithm new words/acronyms. For example, my cousin has completely befuddled the Android's spelling algorithm to the point it even messes up talk to text. It's like reading something from somebody who is ESL. There, their, they're now. I won spelling bees in grade school. Forty plus years behind the wheel of a truck, my skills have diminished somewhat. I can spell and converse fine, but always had trouble putting my thoughts to pen and paper.

Cause people don't read. Plus, some schools are letting spelling slide because people who read this stuff "know" what you meant. All covered in the book "Race to the Bottom"

Until you have to go into single user mode on a unix system. Then it is vi or <shudder> ed. When in doubt, mumble

I was working at Bell Labs, using ed for software development. Our systems got the new vi editor around 1979 or 1980. It became my favorite editor, and later, when I worked in UNIX training organization, one of the courses I taught was a three day course on advanced use of vi, regular expressions, etc. הרחפת שלי מלאה בצלופחים

Looking at life thru a windshield |
English was my second language but fortunately I learned it in school and learned to spell. If you have ever wondered why Germans do not have spelling bees, its because if you can say a German word you can spell it. Every letter is pronounced. Grammar on the other hand is a pain.

Just because something is legal to do doesn't mean it is the smart thing to do. |
