Yes to all. Also, people watch far more than they read.

In addition to not being able to spell, a disturbing number of people can't write either.

Incomplete sentences, run-on sentences, no punctuation, absolutely no clue about the "one paragraph, one thought" approach, no sense of chronology or organization, no consistency.

I can sort of understand the problem with, say, people 30-ish and under that have used social media as their main means of communication, but I see it all the time in people that should know better.

They can't. Even our younger "college" educated workers cannot spell or write worth anything.

These are reports being used to prosecute people. They write like they talk and text. They get insulted when I recommend they go to report writing school.

I was at court last week for a trial and one defense attorney walked up to the prosecutor and said we'll take the plea. I don't want to go up against a Chow report. I took that as a compliment.

Yes, I still get made fun of for double spacing after periods. But at least I know the correct spelling is 've and not of. I am so sick of reading would of, could of, should of.

Kids don’t do book reports in school like they used to. That also means they don’t read as much either. I swear I did a book report every few weeks from the 3rd through 8th grades. In high school, there was always a paper due in History or Science but not anymore.

And then you have the new colloquialisms, or slang, or things are deliberately misspelled or run together on purpose.
It’s hard to keep up.

Two, to, too is simple, but often misused. Someone wasn't paying attention in school, or doesn't care.

Not necessarily any of those. I’ve worked with many bright, educated, and energetic guys (mostly engineers) that were poor spellers.

Some folks are naturally good spellers, some aren’t. Maybe a disability similar to dyslexia.

What do you mean, "any longer?"

I think this has a lot to do with it, sadly seems to originate around about my generation [30s]
Makes me crazy & I won't do it.
Even my boss, in his 50s, does it from time to time.

Re-look? Where TF did that one come from?

I have heard some fairly well spoken people use that one in the past 5 years or so. One of those people I know for certain is able to write flawlessly.

That's too much of "an ask" for me.

The whole "an ask" thing drives me up a wall.

Luckily, we don't have much 'corporate buzzword' speak in our office.
Some of that stuff could fill its own thread of complaints.

My boss likes to “bubble up” things. Like running something up the flag pole. “Bubble it up” to the next level of management or what have you. That should be “bubbled up”.

Is that just a CA thing (she’s in CA), or have I just been blissfully unaware of that particular management colloquialism?

To rduckwor’s original point, however, yes. People are increasingly illiterate, and the trend does not seem to be slowing. It’s no wonder critical thinking is a lost art. These folks can’t formulate ideas coherently to begin with.

I can't spell. Never could. Bit of dyslexia sure didn't help. But one thing I DO know, is things like "There, Their, They're", "your and you're" or other similar trip ups for lots of people.

However, apparently when I'm typing the brain and the fingers are doing their own thing, or at least going different speeds. I screw things like that up constantly. I'll read things I wrote and be so embarrassed, to myself by myself, for messing up something so simple. "How could I have done THAT?" Maybe it's some branch of the dyslexia/dyscalculia thing, because as I'm writing it, I don't see it.

Some of the blame is on the educational system.
