The only place I could text was at the very top of the mountain, and that was pretty weak. Even back at the trailhead there's no cell service. I don't mind...that's kinda the point of getting away, actually. It's a complete break from the rest of the world, and work can't call me even if I wanted them to. But if something goes wrong you're on your own and have to figure it out. Those Garmin satellite In-Reach devices work I guess (hence the helicopter), but I don't have one.
I don't have a GPS. I use paper maps and a compass. National Geographic sells an excellent trail map of the Cloud Peak wilderness. I'll see if I can draw something out on Google Maps for you if you're interested, though. The trails up there are pretty clear and well marked, except when you get up on the mountain itself. ----------------------------------------------------------- Any comments made by this poster are my own and do not reflect the views or opinions of my employer.

Here's a rough hand drawn map of the routes. Red is the Cloud Peak route, yellow is the Lost Twin trail.
I was looking back over this thread just now and suddenly realized that you can actually see my wife and kid in this picture, lol. My son is in black near the center closer to me, and my wife is in blue a little off to the right a ways behind him. Definitely serves to give some scale to what the terrain is like. ----------------------------------------------------------- Any comments made by this poster are my own and do not reflect the views or opinions of my employer.

Thank you for posting a map of your route! Very cool!! On more somber note, the body of the missing hiker, Grant Gardner, has been found and recovered - https://cowboystatedaily.com/2...m-bighorn-mountains/ __________ "I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy."

Thanks. I hadn't seen that yet. I'm glad they found his body so his family gets some closure, but it's sad nonetheless. I wonder how he ended up on the north side. The trail to and from the trailhead where he was parked (the same one we hiked from) goes up the south face. Especially having submitted so late in the day, I can't see continuing on in that direction. ----------------------------------------------------------- Any comments made by this poster are my own and do not reflect the views or opinions of my employer.
