This die? was in the estate of a good friend that passed a year or so ago. I essentially inherited all his reloading gear and this was in it: Pic

It was a rusty blob when I got it but after a long soak in Evaporust, here we are. I'm guessing this is a Redding die only because it has a Redding style lock ring on the body with a set screw.

The die? body itself has a set screw that will lock the double ended tapered pin in position. Note, I don't think the pin was installed when it came to me, but the fitment was a little too coincidental for me to think they aren't related.

Can anyone positively ID this thing?

Thanks.

It appears to be an expander die.
Many (most?) full length sizing dies reduce the diameter of the cartridge neck when the cartridge is inserted into the die, but then something like a “button” on the decapping rod expands the neck to the proper size when it’s withdrawn. A separate expander mandrel like the one shown is considered by many handloaders to be a better neck sizing method because the common button expander tends to pull on the neck and increase its length in an inconsistent manner.

The 0.307 end would be used to expand the necks of cases like the 308 Winchester, and the 0.283 cases like the 7mm Remington Magnum.

Or did you already know all that and are asking something different?

I don't know a thing about this other than what is in my OP.

Sounds like you are confirming my suspicions as to what this is since I can't seem to find pictures of anything that looks like this so far in my searching.

Wasn't sure if perhaps it was related to all the case trimming equipment I got.

I did stick a .308 case in this die at one point to test my theory but wasn't sure if I was on the right track.

Here are a couple of links that show the mandrels used for neck sizing.

There are many dies that use mandrels for neck sizing, but most pictures just show the die bodies and not the mandrels inside.

The one you have is unusual in that it is usable with two different size case necks.

Excellent. Appreciate you steering me in the right direction.

As I've never reloaded rife ammo this is a whole new world for me.

You’re welcome. It’s easy for brief written questions and answers to be misunderstood, and especially when we don’t know much, if anything, about other peoples’ background and knowledge.
