I used to carry my P7 when I also carried it as my duty gun.

When I started out in LE, I carried my tuned Python...which also served as my duty gun

In retirement, and with a bad back, I usually carry smaller guns like a tuned Springfield EMP or a tuned Kahr

No I don’t. Mainly because I don’t own crazy expensive guns. I suppose my most expensive guns would be my P7’s and I don’t carry them for practical reasons. Maybe I NEED a $5000 gun to see what my feelings might be on the subject. lol

I did not pay $3K for my Les Baer pistols, but, they would cost ~$3K+ each, to replace. I have carried two of them, to include while on police patrol. Lately, as age crept up on me, I have been compelled to switch to left side primary, as my right shoulder and right hand no longer provide a most-reliable platform, especially if compelled to draw-and-shoot right-hand-only. So Glocks, which have no thumb safety levers, simply make better sense, for most day-to-day carry, regardless of cost. (I retired from the PD in 2018.)

My take is a suitable gun that you can shoot accurately, even if it's an expensive rig, but short of a valuable collectible like an original mint python, valuable military collectible like an original Luger, and the like.

What good would it be to carry a cheaper gun you can't shoot accurately, and miss the perpetrator attempting to take your life in a SD emergency. How would you think about that if you were lucky enough to survive it after missing with all your shots fired ?

I’m not going to drive a nice car because it’s going to be expensive to wreck. Going to drive a beater with a poor crash rating so it doesn’t tie up my expensive car in a tow yard.

(You are way more likely to have an automobile accident statistically than to get into a shooting. How many posters drive $40k plus vehicles?)

My family's and my life are worth more than any gun that I carry.

When I was on Oakland PD in the 70's, once a gun had no further evidentiary value, and was not otherwise involved in felonious activity, it could be reclaimed by its non-felon legal owner. I'm not aware of many guns that were returned!

When on motors, I did a traffic stop on lady in E. Oakland. Asked her if she had any guns in the car and she said, "In my purse". She did not have a CCW, as those were rare as hen's teeth. After running the serial and giving her a warning for rolling the stop sign, I handed her back the revolver and handful of rounds. She said, "You're giving me back my gun?!" I said, "Yes Mam, I wouldn't be in this part of Oakland at night without a gun either!"

I'm more concerned with is it replaceable than what the cost of of the pistol. It would suck if I had something like a Staccato that can run $3k+ and lost it for any length of time or forever but if I had to use it to save my life I can't put a price tag on that. But if it was one of the revolvers I got from my dad when he passed, not only would it be hard to find a replacement there's the sentimental value attached to it.

I also factor in how easy it would be to get serviced/replacement parts for it. I don't have the schedule to allow getting out like I used to before my son was born, I used to shoot maybe 1000-1500 rounds a month at least and at least about half of that would be what I'd be carrying daily, so I would be carrying something that I could easily get new recoil springs or other misc parts easily if they broke or got worn out.

I'm fairly "budget" with what I carry but it's just because I don't have anything of high value that's in the carry category. I'm carrying my m&p 2.0 compact recently and it's replacing my shield 2.0. My expensive handguns are geared toward hunting versus carry. Must admit there's a small part of me that would like to get a holster for my S&W 6" M57, and look like Dirty Harry (yes it's 41mag, but same frame..). I'd get a holster for it, but for 4 legged threats I'd most likely carry my XDM elite 10mm instead.

Nope. Money spent is money gone, just like life past is in the past.

What is the value of preserving my life, or the life of those I love (or maybe innocent others...)?

I can afford to loose a tool without any consideration of it's cost.

Spend the best you have to obtain the best you need, never look back, and always live to walk away...

I’d love to carry a Browning Hi Power but the practical choice would be to carry my Springfield SA-35 instead.

This makes the most sense for me as well
