I know some people have issues with shoulder holsters, but I do like them for certain situations especially long road trips. I like it since the gun is easy to draw from the seated position and it keeps it up off the belt and interfering with seatbelt. Also it's easier to get comfortable in the seat with a gun poking me in the 4:00 position on the waist. Over the years I'v had several shoulder holsters, most of them some variation on the Galco Miami Classic design.

I've been putting a Gunfighters Inc. Spectre shoulder holster through its paces. My usual routine in trying out a new holster or carry gun is to carry it on the daily dog walk. It's just a good test since it's a lot of movement including the bending over to pick up dookie, a good evaluation to see if it carries securely. Recently completed a long day road trip and photography trip with this setup. The gun I'm carrying is a Sig 320 XTen Comp with a Sig Romeo X Enclosed red dot sight. The XTen Comp is a hard pistol to find holsters for, throw in a red dot and it's even more difficult. I have one of their Kenai chest holsters for my 5" XTen and have been really pleased with it so decided to give the shoulder holster system a try.

The Good:

The gun carries very securely. The additional strap around the lower back pulls the gun and mag carriers in towards the body. Movement of the holster and harness during the draw is very minimal. Even without using the G-clips to secure the holster and mag carrier to the belt, the rig remains in place during the draw. I think the swivel attachments for the harness to the holster and mag carrier helps a lot with keeping the rig tight to the body during movement. The gun is very secure in the holster and I don't feel like there is any chance of it slipping out. Not something I can say the same things about with my Galco VHS for the 1911.

It's a comfortable rig to carry. getting it off and on, especially on can be a little awkward. But once it is on it is probably the most comfortable shoulder holster system I have. I did order mine in black Truhide. No one will mistake it for leather, but it doesn't have the hard plasticky feel of kydex either. Originally I thought the the size of the holster and mag carrier with all of the extra material would be uncomfortable but it is not. Carrying it all day and getting in and out of the truck and slinging camera gear was no problem at all. At no time was I annoyed by it.

Slinging camera gear off an on wis no problem. With the gun not being carried on the belt, I don't have issues with the camera body or lens slamming against it when slung or moving. I could also secures the waist belt of my backpack camera bag when having to hike short distances without interference from a gunbelt.

The bad:

The harness straps are REALLY long. I've got them pulled as short as they will go and I've probably got 4" of strap beyond the adjustment buckles. Gunfighters Inc. does mention in their instructions that the straps are cut long and will need to be trimmed after final adjustment. For reference, I'm 5'-10" and 220lbs wear a 48R jacket. I swear the straps are long enough for Lou Ferrigno. Not a big deal and I understand why they do it, just kind of an annoyance to have to trim down the straps. I also wish they included elastic loops for keepers on the ends of the straps like they do on the Kenai chest rig.

The G clips for the belt attachment re somewhat annoying. A little tedious to loop through and secure, a PITA to disconnect them. Plan ahead, if in need of immodium you aren't getting this rig off in time.

Magazines have to be placed with bullets down in the carriers. Placing them bullets up they are not secure and can become dislodged and fall out rather easily. Placing them with bulets down they are very secure. This is going to be a training issue for me since it is backwards from what I have traditionally done. I wish there was someway to flip the carriers but this is not possible with the design of the rig.

It needs a relatively heavy cover garment to not print. Especially with the adjustment buckles on the back of the harness. Right now mine are at the top of the harness just below the upper cross piece. I've got a single layer Added nylon golfer's shell that I have used a lot as a carry garment and the buckles and the harness print right through. On my road trip the other day I wore a lightweight fleece vest. While if covered and worked well, it was also a warm day and a lighter cover garment would've made a huge difference.

Overall

I'm really pleased with it. There are some minor annoyances, and it does take more effort to get it sized and setup over a more traditional shoulder holster rig. That said it more than makes up for it being secure and comfortable on a long road trip.

Thanks for the detailed write-up. I'm always on the lookout for something that makes carrying in the car easier as you're absolutely right, sticking a gun at 4:00 sucks if you're going to be sitting for hours. I finally just gave up and started carrying a kydex clip-on holster that I can easily slip off and tuck between the seat and the console. The downside is forgetting to grab it and put it back on when I stop for gas.

Something like this could work here in the winter. The problem with summer is it's just too stupid hot to wear any kind of cover garment, and every should rig I've seen is just too bulky and complicated to conceal under anything light enough to be bearable. This one appears to be no exception. The good thing for you being in AK is that failing to conceal isn't necessary as much of a social faux pas as it is many other places.

I do like their more modern approach to the concept, and it appears to be a lot more adjustable than some of the more classic styled rigs. If I ever decide I need one this will probably be the first place I'll look.

They have a "dual wield" option to replace the magazine carriers with a 2nd holster. Big Grin

It does look like a quality rig, though.

I've never used their shoulder rig, but I've been buying their belt holsters for years. I'm a big fan and the few times I've had to reach out to them for customer service they've been awesome to deal with, even if the error was on my end.

Shoulder holster fits my needs on car trips and in the long rainy season as gun is dry and Gortex coat stays inches beyond my waist. Whenit's not raining I keep the zipper down below my gun for quick access. Can be used for backpacking but a chest rig for me is the better option.
