bigger government = smaller citizen |
We've all got our perspectives, and I too am feeling a case of the comic-book-movie-fatigues; however, this observation struck me recently as I watched a trailer for the Eternals. Eye-beams don't translate to live action very well, at all. Sure, they can make some pretty nifty special effects. Sure, there are some writers that can probably make eye-beams work in a live action world, maybe. Mostly though, the problem with eye-beams being used in live action films and TV shows is that writers can't seem to help themselves and often write the beams as missing their mark. This is a problem because, to me, it looks and feels ridiculous. How does someone miss looking at their intended target? In the Eternals trailer, Robb Stark is shown to be floating in the air while a spikey evil serpent-lizard-cheetah is running out of the water and then sprouts wings and lifts off to, I assume, attack the supposed hero. Hero-guy fires off a blast of eye-powers and completely misses his mark. How is this even possible? I mean, I get that we're talking about super heroes, I get it that this is fantasy and child-town inspired content. I feel like I'll have to go and (unfortunately) re-watch some of the more recent Superman and X-men (Bryan Singer's? Not recent but recent enough) movies. Did Cyclops or Superman ever miss an eye-blast in those? How do you completely whiff a gaze? See that's exactly right. Check out this one at the 52s mark: Do you mean to tell me that he was actually looking past that creature's shoulder at the water? The waves? How do you miss with EYE BEAMS?!? “The urge to save humanity is almost always only a false-face for the urge to rule it.”—H.L. Mencken | |||
