Thinking of bendable’s question in the YES/Wakeman recent thread, i wonder what else have you guys discovered looking for a fix?

For example:

Genesis lead mr to Marillion and Fish. But also Steve Hackett lead me to Djabe, P. Collins to Brand X.
Peter Gabriel and his musicians pkayed in Johnny Warman Walking into Mirrors album. Sounds exactly like Peter’s album being recorded at the same time, same studio.

Pink Floyd has many tribute bands, one better than the next but Billy Sherwood’s Tribute albums are unbeatable. The musicians in them are a wet dream.

Pat Metheny made me discover John Abercrombie and Scofield.

Cozy Powell albums used to sound like the poor man’s Jeff Beck. Nothing wrong with that.

Special mention for Charlie Watts solo work as a jazz musician.

What have you got?

OMG Nicky....at 76 in less than a week the sheer number of groups and soloists I've heard over the years and how I found them is simply mind boggling. I won't even attempt to try to list any.

As for your post, I never much got into tribute stuff but out of curiosity just found the pigs tunes from that Floyd tribute album. WTH? Billy Cobham and Al DiMeola, two fusion jazz masters doing Floyd's Pigs. Whoa! hahahahaha

Hey Bob, this isn’t at all about tribute albums or bands but different stuff found looking for similarities.

Billy Sherwood albums are worth mentioning as something extraordinary. A fabulous tribute with outstanding musicians.

The others i mentioned have either similar styles or completely different types of music, not related to the source i was exploring by a long shot.

BTW, you might enjoy Djabe’s light sound (jazz rock).

Oh I know your post wasn't about Tribute Bands.

Checking out Djabe now. Frankly I don't hear much of anything new anymore. Guess I sleep too much. Smile

had a habit, and honestly kinda still do, when I was young that if I liked a song, buy the album, if I liked th album, buy every one that artist(s) or band did,

since I got on the www, and with the streaming etc I don't buy albums often,

however thru Pandora and to a degree youtube, Ihave found many many bands that I would probably never heard,,

example,

big Jate Bush fan, got most of albums,

she was one of the first artist I listened to on pandora,
found out she had a new (kinda new then, more like new to me) album called Aerial, (excellent too) since before I got on the net, no local places played her, or seemed to announce she had a new album

also , since pandora plays the kinda sorta game, I got back into Bjork, and found out about

Goldfrapp ended up with a Goldfrapp Channel)
Fiest
Zero 7
Kascade
Deadmaus
Delirum, (and thru them Emily Haines, which led to Metric)

and a shitton of others,

basically had the same happen wiht a Special Channel (SKA) as well as the XTC channel and Hugh Cornwell channel

amongst others,

Spent way too much time listening to music in my twenties.
If i liked the album i would also go for the full discography and would listen to each musician career individually.

Good tip about Kate Bush, never payed her much attention, nor to Bjork. Generally speaking, never focused on female singers. PJ Harvey is also on my ToDo list.

Never found something similar to Yes and concluded that Return to Forever (band), the whole was a lot more than the sum of its parts, for example. Corea being the least interesting to me. Go figure.
