That part doesn't bother me much, if at all. I thought it was a reasonable injection of the superstition that's common in military atmospheres; likely to the extreme, in the naval culture of the period.

It's realistic, but it takes a well paced movie and throws the anchor and stop it dead. It also took up about 25 minutes which was too long.

I think I and many people missed on this movie when it came out as I was looking for Gladiator on the high seas which it is not. Also looking at the release year I was deployed so I likely missed any advertising explaining what we were getting. Watching it with a few more years on I have come to really appreciate this movie.

It also came out the same year as “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl“ which obviously went on to be a franchise film series. Masters and Commander was a really good movie and it did okay in the box office but not well enough to justify a sequel due to its high production costs.

It was originally intended to be a three part movie series.

It did relatively poorly at the box office and that’s why that never happened.

Thanks. I thought as much. They should have made it a mini tv series for streaming.
