Never wanted to check it out before due to the "Discovery" disappointment, but sure glad I finally did.

I'm sure some will find bad things to say about it, but I thought it was great.

I watched it. I had some really high hopes for it, but holy smokes what a pile of garbage. (IMO)

What he said.

It had NO IDEA what it wanted to be. That said the BASIC high level plot I liked.

While we're at it:

I'm done with Fake Trek until all scrapes and traces of Bad Reboot and "Secret Hideout" are gone. There's hundreds of creators and producers in Hollywood, but the one you put on Star Trek is the same twat that drove Hercules and Xena to cancelation, killed Star Trek as a movie franchise, gave us the Transformers plague, trashed Spider-Man to a point Sony had to partner with Marvel to save it for them, and destroyed the Universal "Dark Universe" before it got started with "The Mummy."

I'm done resetting my VPN so I can watch this shit on Netflix or Amazon Prime. What I wonder is after Alex Kurtzman failed to make CBS All Access a hit and forced them to rebrand to Paramount+, what is ViacomCBS going to do when the rest of his shit does fuck all nothing? At least there's some hope in Star Wars with the John Favreau/Dave Filoni group at LucasFilm doing great stuff while the rest of that shithole is trying to get them fired.

The thing is, there's other better stuff out there to help scratch that sci-fi itch, rather than just watching bad Trek. E.g. Orville, Expanse, Lost in Space, etc.

You don't have to settle for mediocre-to-awful shows, just because they have the Trek label, and use the certain familiar keywords and sound effects, and occasionally drop some fan service easter eggs that might make your inner child squeal despite the rest of the episode making you want to gouge your eyes out. I bailed on Enterprise, and had no qualms against doing the same with Picard or Discovery, despite being a fairly big Trek fan.

(Hell, just go back and rewatch TNG/DS9/VOY if nothing but "real Trek" will do for you.)

I'll be off enjoying the rest of the multitude of non-Trek streaming options that don't suck.

I wanted to like Orville more, and I've watched them all, but it was too jokey / hammy for me (and Seth's humor is fine).

Mandalorian toes the humor line better (albeit loosely), as did Firefly.

There is very little to connect the old Trek universe and the new Trek universe, other than the technology labels and characters. That might be enough for some, but for me it's like saying Solo - A Star Wars Story or The Last Jedi or Rise of Skywalker are just a continuation of the original trilogy. Sure they have the same "technology" and the "force" and the same characters, but the new stuff is a pile of shit. Nothing makes sense, the writers just do things because they want to and don't ever stop to ask if it makes sense.

How do they clone Data from a particle they find? How does Spock get into a WWF brawl with Khan? WTF is it with the writers of Star Trek and the need to inject ninja-bayhem into everything? Mega space-samurai head-chopping? How the ever loving shit is anyone supposed to embrace this stuff as Star Trek?! I don't get it.

I don't care if people like it, that's fine.

I just don't understand how someone could just shrug their shoulders and say, "Well it's better than nothing." Obviously in most circumstances, something is better than nothing, but what kind of a cop out is that? You could say that about anything. This shoe-box full of dog shit labeled "Remington 870 - Space Force 10mm Edition with LED RAINBOW STOCK Effects" is better than nothing. This remastered Akira Kurosawa BluRay where they gender swapped all the characters and then dubbed it over with French porn stars is better than nothing!

I know, I know, it's a matter of opinion; however, if they make even $1 on studio diarrhea then they will stop at nothing to occupy a stool by the bar at The House of Dysentery and shovel every goddamn morsel they can into their gullet.

I loved most Star Trek shows. I used to go run 6 miles or more for Cross Country practice in high-school, and THEN I'd run over a mile and a half, just to get home in time to make a sandwich and watch The Next Generation reruns or Deep Space Nine broadcasts. Seeing what the current crop of writers and property handlers are doing with the greatest space franchises ever is sad.

So ultimately, I think it's a losing battle. There's too much brain-work involved with older stuff, and the newer writers don't dare pose risky questions or take the time to let an episode unfold. Hell, Marvel took a boat load of shit from people that were pissed that Wandavision was released every Friday instead of all at once. People don't have any capacity for delayed gratification, cerebral sci-fi, or multi-episode mysteries. I'm NOT accusing fellow SF members of this, I'm saying "generally speaking" the public writ large can't handle these things any longer. Which is a shame.

I like Star Trek, but wouldnt say I am a harcore Trekkie.

My main issue with the series Picard was Picard himself. He just didnt seem like the Picard from ST:TNG. He didnt have any gravitas, he wasnt a strong capable leader, Jean-Luc Picard was a very self confident in charge kind of captain, never backing down from what he believed in or bowing to anyone. Even ignoring admirals, etc. It was HIS ship and he was the man.

That Picard may well have resigned from Starfleet in anger or protest, but he sure would have kept helping the Romulans any way he could have, even one ship at a time. This Picard just never seemed like he was in charge or in control but along for the ride.

And the android Picard.... just freakin stupid.

Don't weep for the stupid, or you will be crying all day

The following may be sacrilegious, cause for violence in some jurisdictions, and may result in bleeding from the sinus cavity and/or ear canals. If your ED medication stops working see a doctor right away:

All sci-fi, and especially the Trek or Star Wars franchises, can be seen as horrible depending on your level of anal retentiveness or desire for perfection. They are stories, and whether they entertain or inspire is mostly up to the mood you are in the first time you see them.
I loved watching ToS Trek as a kid. Star Wars in 1977 for an eight year old was a new religion of which I was a disciple. Now when I watch them I can't help feeling like I should have seen how bad they were back then.
No doubt shows like Picard are gutter dregs for the still faithful - I get that. But sometimes I want hawtties from the past that look milfy now, and having them shoot way better ray guns doesn't hurt. Seeing an older, more damaged hero and having him told to finally STFU was also refreshing.

But that's just like, my opinion man. Hated that flick btw, go figure.

It comes down to having respect for the source material. Instead of making their own franchise, the retards in Hollywood have to steal one and remake it into their image and propaganda instead of respecting the mythology of the past and writing new material.

Without respect, we reject.
