Good afternoon Borg Collective,

I have been a member of Netflix's DVD club for the past several years and now they're shutting down that service effective 29-SEP. I've looked at Redbox and will more than likely create an account on their website to rent discs. They have boxes conveniently located at my grocery store and Walgreens around the corner.

Question...does Amazon have a program where you "rent" a disc in the mail and then return it when done? I know you can rent movies and shows online and stream it directly, but just didn't know if they have an actual rental program for physical discs.

TIA!!

I will watching this thread.
I received the same email. The original reason I went with the DVDs was that was the only way to watch Film Noir and old western movies as they did not stream them at that time.
Did not say our subscription would be converted to streaming. If they don't have the Film Noir or older western on streaming - I am done with them.

I haven’t seen Amazon having a physical disc rental program, nor can I imagine that they ever would. They’re in the business of selling stuff and sending it one way to you. There’s no value in them setting up a process to send you a disc and you send it back, and having to deal with postage both ways, chancing it getting lost in the mail, or keeping track of who didn’t return disc, etc. Even Netflix thought it was too much of a hassle in an era of streaming, and finally killed it (although I imagine that it was already pretty much dead for a while)

We get free DVDs and blu-ray from the town library. Maybe not the very latest releases, but a big selection of everything from big movies to documentaries to tv series. If you're looking for physical media maybe your library has it. They don't even charge an overdue fee these days!

I check out DVDs/BluRays from our local library all of the time, they have a large, impressive collection, easily thousands of discs. Feature films, from old to the latest. TV shows, documentaries, children's content, etc. They keep up on the latest releases, and I take advantage of the fact that many people do not check out the discs because of streaming (I only have Amazon Prime). One of my favorite town resources.

Oooooohh...GREAT IDEA!!!! Thanks, Fly-Sig!! [thumbs up]

I'm gonna say Redbox will probably have the movies I want to see, but it's TV Series that will not be available at Redbox. Will check out the library...

If you're OK with about double the cost but getting 4K movies and Blu-Rays (vs Netflix's mix of Blu-Rays and DVDs) then check out 3D Bluray Rental.com

The name threw me at first - they do have 3D discs to rent, but also thousands of regular ones, too.

I buy discs used off eBay a lot. A lot of folks just buy them for the digital codes and sell the discs. Most are under $10.
I buy them and rip them to my media server.

Our library is part of a regional consortium consisting of 13 public/academic libraries, so if our local library doesn't have what we're looking for, they can probably get it from another library. They also have a 'Suggest a Purchase' program for cases when nobody has it! My wife is a frequent borrower and they know her quite well, so we've never suggested a purchase that was not fulfilled.
