Not only do I miss them, let this be a reminder of how good "Goodfellas" is.

Genius.

Definitely. Regardless of the movie, they were at their best when they disagreed.

I have read that they weren't pals off-camera. I have never been a fan of Goodfellas due to the mixture of humor and violence although I do like the scene, where all the relative's names are some variation of Peter or Paul.

Like the scene to fix the trunk 'noise'. That was pretty gooey.

I love The Godfather, easily my favourite film, but it's not a realistic portrait of the Mafia, for a lot of reasons. It's a profound film about corruption, a soul's descent into Hell.

I grew up with guys like Henry Hill and the others in Goodfellas. Where Godfather sentimentalises and romanticises mobsters, Goodfellas shows all the stupidity and brutality. Their robotic, humourless laughter-- like pack animals barking, like hyenas-- captures it perfectly.

Siskel and Ebert were terrific. I'm not surprised they were not friends offstage, they often seemed not to even like each other. But they played well off each other, agreeing and disagreeing, and in the process brought real insights to movies.
