He was a Canadian First Nations, Oneida tribal member, and I think a wonderful actor. He was nominated for an Academy Award for his role as Kicking Bird in Dances With Wolves. He first appeared on television in 1979, and had many roles in tv and movies. I fondly remember his role as Tribal Police Chief, Ben Shoyo, in Wind River, a favorite movie. One of those people you see in movies that you (or at least I) think you’d like.

Loved his deadpan delivery… he was great in “Northern Exposure” as well.

Yeah, my first thought when I looked the name up and recalled some of his roles was "he would've been an interesting guy to sit and have a cup of coffee with." Damn.

Sorry to hear this. He had some good roles over the years. He was also a Marine Vietnam vet and a police officer.

That cop movie might be Thunderheart.

Did not recognize the name but when I saw his picture, remembered him for his many pictures/shows portraying a tribal guy.
