My wife and I watched Red One on Amazon Prime last night (strangely, it is also in the theaters at the same time). We both really enjoyed it. It is a Christmas movie that is at times "dark", but has a redemption in the end. Great cast -- Dwayne Johnson, Chris Evans, J.K Simmons and Lucy Liu among others. It is really clever with amazing CGI (the "new version" of Santa's sleigh is awesome!). I guess you could sort of describe it as a "high-tech" version of Santa Claus (so that's how he can visit all of those billions of houses in one night!)

This may now be one of our favorite Christmas movies

One question. We’ve got granddaughters in the house this weekend; will a girl young enough to still believe, walk out of the theater with her Santa Claus magic still intact?

My wife and I just finished it. We both enjoyed it a lot. Plenty of funny dialogue and good action.

To your question, TMats, I’d probably steer clear of showing it to your granddaughters or maybe preview it as you’ll have a better idea of what your grandkids will pick up on.

We just watched it yesterday.

Enjoyed it a good bit.

*TMats- I think it would not break the belief of your Granddaughter, but there is some light violence, might not be appropriate for that reason.

Preview if you can then decide.

Not sure her age, but there is nothing that would hurt her belief, in fact quite the opposite. Santa is very real, elves, north pole, all of it. Santa magic is very much the entire story.

Anyone who didn't like this movie wasn't paying attention to what it is. Its a kids / family movie about Santa Claus getting kidnapped by anti - Christmas forces and a magical body guard saving him. Quite a fun movie, my wife loved it.

I caught this on Prime and I liked it. Good effects, some good people and some humor.

My wife and I enjoyed it on Amazon last night.

I thought brining in the Norse and Germanic (Gryla and Krampus) was genius.

Appreciate the replies.

ETA: We went this afternoon. I thought it was very good. My wife seems to be so-so on it. Out granddaughters (ages 9 and 5) didn’t have much to say, maybe we’ll get more out of them this evening. I smiled broadly at the brief Die Hard tribute.

Funny story

I saw the TV commercial for this and went "Ugh...WTF was THAT?" And a lot of reviews started coming in panning it

My in-laws went to the movies and LOVED it. They are both late 60's and very conservative/traditional types and when I heard they were going to see it, I was very confused.

Who knew?

Wasn't this is movie where all manor of stories came pouring out that Johnson was an absolute dick to work with? He got paid an insane amount, continually showed up late and inserted himself into the script and production process.

I think so.

That said I had no real desire to see this but ended up watching and it was not too bad. Nothing earth shattering or super memorable but generally really fun with absolutely no bullshittery inserted just cuz. It harkened back to older action flicks in a way.

The thing that struck me is that with some minor script editing, some casting changes and a few scene changes/deletions you could easily make this a straight up Christmas horror movie.

As it stands though nothing should break a kids beliefs or anything like that and the violence/action/language is about on par with a light Marvel movie.

All in fun.

I've seen a lot of the new Christmas movies and this one was actually quite good. My family (2 boys, 14 and 16) both enjoyed it and my wife did as well. We all were very pleasantly surprised. And the cast was great IMO.

I did not care for the kinda weird, Mel Gibson 'fatman' movie. Just did not strike a chord with me.

I did love the "Violent Night" one from 2022.

Now, having said that, this is what I thought Red One would be, an violent Santa thing. It was not, and I really enjoyed it. even with the Krampus part.

But I will not be leaving out Macaroons this year Smile

I'm really confused by how they put this in the theaters like a week ago yet now it's already streaming on Prime?

If I were a struggling movie chain, I'd be really pissed off that these studios are doing this.

We watched it last night and i was impressed. I did not expect much but it was a fun, uplifting move.

The Christmas song references in the dialog were cleverly done and I found myself smiling quite a bit watching this film.
