Another great film from Argentina. Curious if 0-0 has seen the film. Subtitled on TCM.

Olga Zubarry as the South American version of Marilyn Monroe.

They got some stuff in the film that would never have made it past American censors in 1953. A woman is screaming at the top of her lungs because she has just seen a man throw a child's body in a sewer. In another part of the nightclub a woman who is dancing says to her partner,"I like it rough too, but I don't scream like that."

I watched it on Sunday. Good movie, but the title is grossly misleading.

I watched it. Pretty good. The filming in the actual sewers was impressive.

Aw, my old video store customer was actress Vonetta McGee. Her husband was actor Carl Lumbly. Such an awesome friendly family. Vonetta passed away in 2010. She wasn't a fan of the blaxploitation genre and was embarrassed to talk about her film appearances with me. I thought they were cool!

Well, one of the gals who worked in these films, I think it was Tamara Dobson (Cleopatra Jones) said "I don't remember being exploited. I just remember everybody working."

Never heard of it and our local TCM is not fond of such type movies nor is CineAR (?) the local all argentine old movies.

Olga Zubarry was a famous actress when i was a kid. The other guy rings a distant bell but I honestly was too young to care. Born in 59.

There has always been a shortage of black folk in my country. Nowhere near neighboring Uruguay, Brazil or Paraguay.
One wonders how many slaves there were to begin with and other stories say they were sent to fight the local tribes and the territorial/trade wars and decimated.

A black man is a rara avis, imagine a vampire on top… Talk about being discrete and low profile Big Grin

It was sitting on some shelf somewhere and the Film Noir foundation restored it over many months. In my opinion it is a better version of M which was a 1931 film starring Peter Lorre. It is about a pedophile who murders chidren. There is no mention of sexual abuse, but a strong attraction to chidren.
Thanks for your input. Out of curiousity what films to they show on the Argentinian version of TCM??

Don’t usually stop to watch since the restored stuff leaves a lot to be desired. It’s grey on white sometimes but now and then i recognize a movie or two from my growing up days.
The very very old stuff takes a while for your sight to adapt and start seeing what is going on.

There was a golden age for our movie industry in the 40-50s and besides our sense of comedy, very childish and for he family, dramas and thrillers were a pleasure to watch.
Nowadays i have to be forced to watch our current production. They all look the same and have hole plots everywhere, IMO.
Unfortunately, most important actors just have one single version of themselves and deliver it because the public likes it. They hardly explore new characters at all.
One look at the cast and you can bet what the result is.

As a kid, the local channels used to show movies back to back on Saturdays, Sundays being reserved for soccer. Watched hundreds of argentine movies mixed with western , war and epic ones. Someone was fond of half naked oiled and muscular guys running around with small towels around their waists… Eek

Don’t think they offer subtitles but very likely you can find the same movies online.

The bitter stems 1956 is one of my favorites. Sends a strong message.
The restorations are done well since UCLA and the film noir school subsidize it. They are all digitized. The ending is something else.. No towel boys though

As far as i remember and was aware at my age, our action heroes werr from E. Flynn to Mel Gibson, throw in a few brits and a few frenchmen too.

Local products were light comedy with family values and all smile, sing and be happy for rhe camera. An authoritarian or military overwatch never too far.

To clear things up to people who haven’t seen it, there is no vampire in the movie, at least not of the common undead, fanged, bloodsucker type. As has been said, it’s basically a remake of Fritz Lang’s “M” about a pedophile child killer. The “vampire” comes from the prosecutor (DA) calling the killer a vampire who preys on children, not a literal vampire. Don’t know where the “black” came from. The killer isn’t black, and the only time I remember it comes up is near the end when one the tramps who are looking for the killer says something like “there’s the black vampire”. It’s just a throwaway line. Maybe it’s because he has a black heart or something.

Look up Narciso Ibañez Menta, a spanish actor quite popular when i was a kid. He had VERY scary stories that were hypnotic.

Still have nightmares about his characters.

Yes, I'm aware of this, I read the synopsis. I just wanted to work Blacula into the thread. Razz

Also, I do have to say that even though I have yet to see this film, I sincerely doubt it approaches the genius of Lang's M. If you want to see a very good remake of M, check out the 1951 American version directed by Joseph Losey and with David Wayne in the Peter Lorre role. Not bad at all, and with great Los Angeles location shooting.

Eddie Muller appeared to like this one better. He spoke about the fact there was more tension in the film in addition to women having lead roles. It is not a remake but based on the same theme. You felt some empathy for the murderer in the sense that he conveyed the fact that he had irrestible impulses. I really like the Peer Gynnt tune. JHMO

My take on the film compared to M was that the killer was more interesting psychologically. He was conflicted and sick and just couldn’t help himself. Also, some of the scenes of him stalking the kids had a lot more tension, I thought. The female witness who saw him was an interesting angle. The only thing that didn’t really work for me was the creepy DA trying to hit on her.
