I’ve been wanting to get back into an MMO that didn’t revolve around Blizzard content, so I decided to give Eve a try (for the third time.) I think I finally got into it, especially because I’ve been utilizing YouTube and wiki resources to bolster my gameplay. Found a corporation with cool, laid back people and joined a fleet engaged in mining resources. This allows me to go afk for a few mins at a time while my ship does its thing.

Anyone else playing?

Eve Online set a Guinness World Record a few months ago in which over 6500 people were involved in a single pvp fight. In that fight, 1.4 trillion ISK (the in-game currency) worth of ships was destroyed.

https://www.guinnessworldrecor...aking-fury-at-fwst-8

Thursday, we nearly reached that record with about 5400 people in a single system. In that fight, 15 trillion ISK in ships was destroyed. ISK has an actual monetary value in U.S. dollars, so it's the equivalent of approximately $130,000 USD.

Tonight, we break that record. With 2 hours left until the fight happens, there are already 11,000 people getting staged to fight. Some are saying it'll cost about half a million dollars.

That sounds like fun. Do they have a demo or trial? What kind of rig do I need?

You can actually play for free and still accomplish a lot but the real fun happens behind the pay wall. This may be confusing to watch, but it's the end of year report for my main character:

If you're interested, use the referal link on that video page to get started.

You don't need the latest and greatest in PC mods but it's can be a visually stunning game with a good rig. But airsoft guy is mostly correct. You don't really pay attention the visuals so much as your HUD.

It can be a daunting game to get into but there is a lot of help provided to new players through community channels in-game. This helped get me started in the game back in 2019:

As far as tonight's fight went (though, it's actually still going), we got fucked. Before we were able to jump into the system, the enemy lagged it out by deploying hundreds of drones which took up server resources. We basically jumped into a time-lagged trap. Our side lost 40 Titans, each costing around 100 billion ISK, while their side lost two Carriers worth only a few billion ISK each. We couldn't even get everyone into the system due to the lag. We ended up with about 6700 in system. The fight continues but only amongst the sub-capital fleets--destroyers and cruisers, mainly.

Here's the developer blog of the actual events that occured on Saturday night:

Unprecedented War, Unprecedented Battles

The ongoing war in New Eden has seen some of the largest and bloodiest battles in EVE’s history. The war has already claimed two official Guinness World Records, whilst also breaking many other EVE records, including a record number of battleships killed in one battle, and a record number of Titans destroyed in another.

I've visited it twice. The first time I was put off by not being able to group w/ my nephew to get credit on missions. Oh well.

While all the MMOs suck time from you, I never felt it more than when mining in EVE. I've been able to go take a shower and such but I was never in the better mine fields where I could really make some money.
I got to the point where some of my skills were capped in the free version and dropped it.

Maybe I'll revisit it. There were many aspects I enjoyed. Much of the game I haven't experienced. Eve makes me feel like a perpetual noob.
I see I still have the 3 vol. ISK guides on my desktop for a little light reading.

As I said in the original post, this is my third attempt at playing. It finally stuck, but I was lucky enough to get into a corporation with a lot of active people from whom I could learn right away. But it's not so difficult to find people to talk to and learn from, as there are dedicated channels solely for helping new players get on their feet.

To be honest, I'm not much for PvP but it's a huge part of the game and after a year of training into various ships and doctrines, I felt it was time to get involved. I had a friend already in a large alliance who got me into his corporation (clan, in EVE-speak), and it just so happened it was one of the alliances involved in this huge war that's been raging for six months. It's been exciting at times and extremely frustrating at times, but it all evens out.

Although I took my time to get into PvP in EVE, it's not necessary to train for months in order to do it. Many people have alternate characters that they create just to get involved in PvP right away, and many corporations and alliances help new players get into ships quickly.

I feel like I'm trying to sell the game. It's not for everyone. It's like playing Go. Easy to learn but difficult to master. But if you're interested in trying, sign up through the first link I put up in the post above. It'll help get you started with extra skill points. And, of course, I'll be available to help get anyone sorted, too.
