saw this on HBO last night

1hr episodes on Punk Rock and the evolution of it,

Iggy Pop produced it,

Episode 1 part one started in Detroit (Iggy and the Stooges, MC5 and a few others) then moved on to New York,

part 2 aired afterwards and went to London

pretty good series so far,

Were the Dictators on it? Or New York Dolls?

Gotta take this with a grain of salt when Iggy gives Detroit so much credit. No doubt Detroit was doing very much its own thing late 60's on, the punk posturing may have preceded the music. Where the music began I don't know but some earlier stuff like the Troggs or the Seeds got some balls rolling.

alrighty

found it,

Comcast for whatever reason puts an Epix channel in the middle of the HBO channels, hence my original confusion,

4 part series,

from Detroit, to NY to London, then back to the US for LA, Seattle, DC and a few other places

from Iggy up to Green Day as a time line,

many of the commentators were from various bands that were not mentioned, or mentioned very briefly,

example, Ian MacKaye spoke a lot, but they never showed a clip or mentioned any band he was in,,

ditto Pauline Black, granted, it would be a bit of a stretch to call The Selector Punk, but you would think a mention of Ska and punk (influenced) would be fit,,,, nope

basically a shallow look at the history of the genre, JMHO

I have to disagree with the "Green Day is not punk" argument. They are punk in the way of the Descendents. Listen to Milo Goes to College and you will hear the origin of Dookie.

I do agree that Green Day is shit -- not because of their music, but because of their "outspoken" frontman.

Interesting. I'm looking for the series now. As a kid in the 1980s in California, the punk world might as well have ended for me at the state line (Dead Kennedys, Social Distortion, Black Flag, etc.)
