I lived in Fairbanks, as his commercial fame grew, I was back in Montana as his films started to take off. I was a bit old for any of his films. That being said had younger cousins who enjoyed them immensely.

Yep, everyone in NC was saying “Hey Vern!”

They sowed the wind, and now they are going to reap the whirlwind." -Bomber Harris

"Ernest Saves Christmas" is one of my holiday favorites. He was awesome. He also played the (original) Slinky Dog in Toy Story. . . Fear God and Dread Nought Admiral of the Fleet Sir Jacky Fisher

An old earworm of mine is from one of his commercials- can't remember what it was about but in the end he asks as he holds up a pizza- "Whats these dead minnows doin' on my pizza?" “Posterity! You will never know how much it cost the present Generation to preserve your Freedom! I hope you will make good use of it. If you do not, I shall repent in Heaven, that I ever took half the Pains to preserve it.” ― John Adams "Fire can be our friend; whether it's toasting marshmallows, or raining down on Charlie." - Principal Skinner.

I never warmed up to his Ernest character. Lots of respect for him able to carve a nice career but, not my cup of tea.

He probably used the line in many of his commercials (I don't recall it; my intro to him was his Pine State Milks ads), but this is one of them: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DP2H-6QzMlc

Yep remember him. I lived in Tennessee close to White House where he was at the time he did the "Vern" commercials. Saw him in a bar in Goodlessville once. Men fight for liberty and win it with hard knocks. Their children, brought up easy, let it slip away again, poor fools. And their grandchildren are once more slaves. -D.H. Lawrence

Yep. Purity milk commercials. I think they used those for other brands too in other areas.

His commercials aired in AK and MT IIRC. For things like slice, pizza, and other less regional politics.

Power is nothing without control |
A friend of my once bought me a copy of Dr. Otto and the Riddle of the Gloom Beam. I still haven't forgiven him. I do remember thinking Mr. Varney was a hoot when I was younger though. - Bret

The Wife and I still use the "Know whut I mean, Vern?" line and those ads haven't been around in what...30+ years? Be careful when following the masses. Sometimes the M is silent.

I've a latent suspicion that Jim Varney tired of the Ernest typecast and so faked his own death to take on the Mike Rowe personna. "It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye". The Little Prince, Antoine de Saint-Exupery, pilot and author, lost on mission, July 1944, Med Theatre.

Not as lean, not as mean, Still a Marine |
Growing up I thought he was a local comedian because he did the commercials for our local milk company. Once I joined the military and saw those same commercials except for the name of the local company all over the country, did I finally get an appreciation for just how much commercialism there was in the US. But "Ernest goes to Camp" will always make me smile... parachuting turtles! I shall respect you until you open your mouth, from that point on, you must earn it yourself.

Wow how funny you mention him. I was thinking of him earlier today. What a coincidence. As Gibb mentioned I thought Varney was local too back in the day. In the Tulsa thread in the Lounge, page 2, David Lee mentioned Brahms Ice Cream in Oklahoma. It’s actually Braums Ice cream. Jim Varney used to do tons of commercials for Braums.
