I recently read that Ray Davies opened up an amplifier, took a razor blade and cut lines into the speaker cone to get this rough, raw, overdriven sound

Dave Davies, not Ray I believe. Ray was keys, while Dave was guitar. He was also responsible for changing the riff from piano to guitar. Ray originally wrote it as a jazz or blues song, but Dave thought it sounded better as a guitar led rock song.

Two Kinks songs in the thread tho! W00T!

I stand corrected, thank you

I think the OP intended his "best intro" to be Peter Wolf's famous introduction monolog before tearing into the song. So I'll play along the same lines, here Pete Townshend used to have a lengthy monolog introducing "A Quick One While He's Away". It seems to be different every time, I like the one in Live At Leeds, but I'll post this one. And the song has one of my favorite musical openings.

Another iconic song with a very recognizable and interesting intro.

Yep. I've spent many an hour on his channel. He's one of my favorite channels; he has some great content.

[/FLASH_VIDEO][/QUOTE] good choice, I'll be honest, I prefer the album version of that tune better than that vid, and from that album, a damn good intro for a damn good song [FLASH_VIDEO]

Rush: Broone's Bane . A one and a half minute intro that's actually a separate track before introducing The Trees. It takes the opposite approach of hooking you in with a relaxing tune before introducing a progressive song.

And although short, who can deny YES with Owner of a Lonely Heart
