All the kids love Cumerbatch as SH. I prefer Basil Rathbone who was excellent. Jeremy Brett was rather good in the role as well.

My thoughts as well. He truly defined the character. There have been some good portrayals over the years, but they're all just chasing Basil in my opinion. Those old B&W movies make up some of my absolute favorites in my collection.

I grew up on Basil Rathbone as Sherlock. When I read all of the stories, it was he that I saw. However, I have to admit that Jeremy Brett was also excellent.

During my teenage years I read all the cases of Sherlock Holmes and I think this was the first time I ran across a 'Hero' who was severely flawed... was throw a moral and ethical curve when I discovered he was addicted to cocaine.... this was in the early 70's and I was being indoctrinated into the total 'just say no' thing as well as marajuana would make you a heroine addict.....

I've caught the occasional Rathbone movies and they play well... but for me Brett with his red watery eyes was closer to the original.
