Marty Robbins - el paso (vinyl)
When I was a boy, Marty Robbins set my imagination loose. One day I hope to find this little cantina in el paso.

That is the only album I've ever owned in all the common formats. Vinyl, 8-track, cassette, CD and MP3. Cool

My Mom and Dad had his gunfighter ballads album.

I used to listen to it all the time...

To be immediately followed by his "El Paso City"

For all of Dad's cross-country PCS moves that I was old enough to remember, the music in the car might as well have been limited to two "stations": Marty Robbins (Gunfighter Ballads) and Johnny Cash.

Hated both then.

Love both now.

I assume you mean here, because the song was released 17 years later.

(and wasn't particularly good IMO)

so you guys, once again I am amazed.

Not only is there 'el paso city' there is also 'feleena (el paso)' as well.

Further, I found there are two versions of el paso, one that has an extra verse that was not on the 'gunfighters disc' it was a single but because it was over 4 min, columbia worried it would not get radio play.

Anyway, I have ordered the full version. After all these years, the things I learn on this forum Smile

Funny thing about this song, despite knowing every other song on the album well as a kid, I have no recollection of this song until I was an "adult". Maybe my dad just didn't like it? lol

The extra verse would have been the 5th, he shows some remorse over shooting the guy:

Just for a moment I stood there in silence
Shocked by the foul evil deed I had done
Many thoughts raced through my mind as I stood there
I had but one chance and that was to run

This 4:43 live version includes the extra verse:

It may just be my fuzzy memory, but I swear I remember hearing (in an interview) the shorter version was just that, made shorter for the radio.

I used to have this album until my divorce when the soon to be ex-wife stole it and a bunch of other stuff.
