Granted I have not watched it in probably 10 years though I have watched it more times than I can count.
To be honest I still don’t really understand it but I sure do enjoy it.
I did not catch it in the theater, the little girl I was dating at the time brought the DVD home from work because a fella she worked with said she needed to see it. He was a bit of a weird dude so I was not sure what to expect.
Well, we watched it the first go round and both pretty much had no clue what we had just watched or why we really enjoyed it.
We watched it every night for the next 2 weeks. Trying to figure out what the point was and honestly never did.
Guess it is time to break out the BluRay and watch it again here soon.
I am pretty sure we had a lengthy thread on the film many years ago.
So, 20 years later tell me what you think of Donnie Darko.

Wow, didn't realize it'd been that long. Can't remember the last time I watched it.

I saw the director's cut in a tiny theater on the UT Austin campus. Slightly different, but has some extra content throughout.

Will have to see if it's available on stream & rewatch. Personally, I preferred the original over the DC version.

I remember many years ago when you said you liked this film. I had made a Donnie Darko signature some time before that.

Somebody told you "Hey, you need this neat signature" so you added it without knowing it was mine and I saw it and said "What are you doing with my Darko signature?" Big Grin

At the wrap party for the film, Seth Rogen and Jake Gyllenhaal agreed that they had no idea what the movie was about.

Seth Rogen doesn't know what anything is about.

I watched this film many times, but it's been many years since the last time. Definitely a cult classic.

Don’t know why but I have never watched this film. Probably will remedy that if I can find a place to stream it.

They're all part of this great big conspiracy of bullshit. And they're scared of people like you, because those bullshitters know that you're smarter than all of them. You know what you say to people like that? Hmm? "Fuck you."

I can't remember the last time I watched it sober. Good stuff though; makes me feel all nostalgic.

Quite the memory you have.

As for those wanting to stream it. It is on the YouTube not sure on quality or commercials.

Great flick. It was deeply disturbing the first time I saw it. I watched it many times after, but not in years. I need to queue it up soon.

It's probably been at least 10 years since I've seen it as well, but I used to watch it over and over. I know I've watched it more times than any other movie, likely by a wide margin. I never really figured out what I liked about it, but it was so out there I could watch it over and over again and it still felt fresh. I too have the DVD at home, I guess I need to break it out again.

"The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people."
"Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy."
"I did," said Ford, "it is."
"So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?"
"It honestly doesn't occur to them. They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates the government they want."
"You mean they actually vote for the lizards."
"Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course."
"But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?"
"Because if they didn't vote for a lizard, then the wrong lizard might get in."

Like a cott damn elephant.

As to what is the meaning of Donnie Darko- Well, if it has any meaning at all, it seems to me the question posed by Gretchen and then recalled towards the end of the film by Donnie, is the core of the movie:

"And what if you could go back in time and take all those hours of pain and darkness and replace them with something better?"

Notice what happens immediately after Donnie remembers her words.

You want your sister to lose weight? Tell her to get off the couch, stop eating Twinkies and maybe go out for field hockey. You know what? No one ever knows what they want to be when they grow up. You know, it takes a little, little while to find that out. Right, Jim? And you. Yeah, you. Sick of some jerk shoving your head down the toilet? Well, you know what? Maybe you should lift some weights or take a karate lesson. And the next time he tries to do it, you kick him in the balls.
