I’m trying to build playlists for work of various genres I enjoy, such as metal, 90’s Country, 90’s Alternative, Piano, you know what I mean.

One of my absolute favorite styles is epic orchestral, often from movies (though not always), though I’m not a huge movie guy. So help me out I’ve got several in mind (from the likes of Gladistor, Pirates of the Caribbean, and LOTR) but I’ll start with this one, which I only discovered today.

Adagio in D Minor by John Murphy from the movie Sunshine (watching now for the first time).

https://youtu.be/NQXVzg2PiZw

Help me out and add your favorite! I’ll add some more later.

I'd never heard of this genre before. Would the theme from Starman qualify?

The Ravel orchestration of “Pictures at an Exhibition” (Modest Mussorgsky) has to be on the list.

I was just listening to The best of Hans Zimmer, live album by different orchestras that will fit your bill.

I'm also a fan of Eric Serra (Big Blue, 5th element, The professional, etc ).

I love the soundtrack to the movie Trinity and Beyond. It is on amazon music but here is a good sample:

This is a BIG question, so I'll try to be brief.

My ideas on "epic" symphonic works (often involving a chorus):

1. Orff- Carmina Burana
2. Mahler- Symphony no. 2: Resurrection
3. Mahler- Symphony no. 8: Symphony of A Thousand
4. Holst- The Planets (particularly Mars and Jupiter)
5. Beethoven- Symphony no. 9 (movement IV)
6. Verdi: Requiem (particularly "Dies Irae")
7. Stravinsky- The Rite of Spring

Film Scores:

8. Anything by John Williams
9. Hans Zimmer- Crimson Tide, The Rock, The Peacemaker, to name a few
10. Howard Shore- The Lord of the Rings trilogy

My favorite film musical score is “Ben Hur” from 1959.

For demonstrations of the bass in your speaker system, try Saint-Säens Symphony No. 3, has a marvelous organ climax.

We need some Schubert. I'll propose the 9th Symphony but lots of his other stuff would do quite as well. Here's the last movement:

This symphony came within an inch of being lost. The manuscript was found in a pile of papers in the brother's Paris flat years after Franz's death.

These and Also Sprach Zarathustra are what sprang immediately to mind.

There you have Charlie Wilson´s War "Turning the Tide" theme. I particularly enjoy the "borrowed" excerpt with the north african percussion
