Directed by Hal Ashby and with a screenplay written by the one and only Robert Towne (Chinatown) and starring Jack Nicholson, Randy Quaid and Otis Young, The Last Detail is the story of two Navy career men assigned shore patrol to take a young seamen to the brig for a theft he committed.

This road film is emblematic of its time- the late Sixties / early Seventies- and if you've never seen it, you're missing out. If you have seen it, it's time to watch it again.

This is the Portsmouth (NH) Naval Prison they were bringing him to. It was shut down in 1974, a year after the film was released. It's still there after many abandoned redevelopment plans over the decades since it closed.
