Hard to imagine what his early life was like. My wife read this morning that he left home at 13 because his father couldn’t deal with him being gay. More than that, a flamboyantly gay black man in ‘50s Georgia.

Sad to hear. He often popped up around Lynchburg, TN. Some said he had a place around there. I never saw him.

I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all. -Ecclesiastes 9:11

...But the king shall rejoice in God; every one that sweareth by Him shall glory, but the mouth of them that speak lies shall be stopped. - Psalm 63:11 [excerpted]

He was fairly significant for a short-to-moderate period of time.
However, you can tell he was pretty jealous that he didn't make it to the very top.
He was good and has his moments but he always said he was better than he was perceived.
Nevertheless...RIP

I gotta believe that he and a half dozen dozen others had a considerable amount to do with the outrageous success of those coming shortly thereafter.

He and many others shattered and smashed the music world's boundary's.

I don't think that he "paved the way " for the british invasion, but he most certainly got people ready for a brand new way to listen

I love the driving piano intro to Lucille and Richard's clever lyrics, examples:

"I woke up this morning, Lucille was out of sight, I asked my friends about her but all their lips were tight."

"Mom and papa told me, son you better watch your step, if they knew about Miss Molly, have to watch my pop myself."

A true original from my era of rock and roll. It's ridiculous to see some people inducted into the so-called Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Bill Haley, Fats Domino, Gene Vincent, Gary Bonds and others I could name, THEY were rock and roll.
