When you think of Gladiator, one of the very best movies of the 2000s, there’s a good chance one scene comes to mind first—Maximus Decimus Meridius, standing battered but defiant in the Colosseum, declaring his now-legendary speech: “I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next.” It’s one of the most powerful moments in Ridley Scott’s historical epic. But believe it or not, Russell Crowe nearly torpedoed the line because he thought it was, in his words, “shit.” | |||

If you haven't already, check out the extended Director's Cut of Gladiator. Unlike a number of other Ridley Scott Director's Cuts it doesn't necessarily "fix" any problems, mainly because there wasn't much to fix from the theatrical cut. It just adds a little bit more to the story, especially in further exploring the Emperor's brutality/depravity and his messy relationship with his sister. | |||
