Never heard the term until a few weeks ago cruising the higher number channels on Sirius XM and came across channel 311 called Yacht Rock. They were playing my boy Lionel Richie, then came on some Steely Dan, followed by Ambrosia, and Stevie Nicks. Found myself hanging out on this station for a bit and recognized quite a bit of it. I have never been on a Yacht before nor had I heard the term Yacht Rock before. Guess, this is what folks listen to on Yachts?? Always heard this called kind of genre called Easy Listening or Smooth Jazz maybe.

I never liked the title and only heard it in the last year or so. Some great music and stuff I grew up to. I think it's more a marketing term. I find it kind of offensive as those songs don't cater to wealthy people which is what I associate the term with.

There has been a band in Atlanta called Yacht Rock Revue for 15 years or more. They have literally Trademarked the term "yacht rock."
They played a set of 70s easy listening songs one night on a whim at a bar and the crowd ate it up so they honed their craft and became YRR. I've seen them a few times and the routinely sell out small clubs around Atlanta and have played all over the country.
The Yacht Rock genre term has been around for a long time. I think it came about 'officially' when the explosion of selling tape sets, then CD sets, via TV commercials blew-up in the late-80's and 90's. The adverts started to get comical and Yacht Rock was one of those, 'you gotta get it' in-between swigs of Keystone or, Zima

Yeah dude. Yacht or Boat Rock. Easy listening stuff from the 70’s. I remember seeing infomercials to buy a CD set in the 90’s. The term has been around for a few decades now.

Mostly "soft", contemporary adult-focused music from the 70s and 80s, isn't it? Think I first heard that term about a decade ago. Seems to fit; the musical soundtrack to living the 'me first' life in those two decades.
Thanks to the convulsive, involuntary reminiscing caused by this thread, now I can't get that damn Christopher Cross 'Ride like the Wind' out of my mind. Quintessence of yacht rock right there, as is his 'Sailing' song. Scorched brain matter courtesy of Michael McDonald. Mental neurosis by Kenny Loggins and Kahlua and creme. Gee thanks, guys...
Since I'm cringing on it...

There is a group called "Yachtley Crew" that also travels for concerts. I first heard of them when out for a dinner near home at a place that was next to a venue.

local cover band does a great Yacht Rock show, wife enjoys them
however, they seem to attract what she calls 'The Dentist" which means middle aged men and women, usually appear to be professionals, that drink one or 2 beer too many, crowd the crowd, if that makes sense, and spills most of the pint on the ground, or on her shoes,,
sometimes, no matter where she stands, or I (She is 5'4", I am 5'7", some 6'drunk will stand directly in infront of us,
