It shows how America can transform a small immigrant in to a man of means.

mr k, when you said obscurity is no hindrance, you meant it.

America, America
IIRC America is barely seen in the movie--it's all about getting there and what it means, to Elia Kazan. This was the "date movie" my bride of 49 years and I saw on our first date.
As for my choice, I would have to say it has to be a western because that was an entire genre that America gave the world. And among the thousands of those, I will pick True Grit--either version.

I'll have to disagree, Grapes of Wrath was built on a socialist foundation.

Edit: Open Range.
Watched it again and it hit me, this is a VERY American movie. Common man standing up to the bully. Regular guys doing the right thing and standing up for the little people: call them minorities, new-comers, men/women, children. Everyone working to make it while dealing with a unforgiving environment. This message has been edited. Last edited by: corsair,

I vote with my all time favorite, Casablanca. Because Bogie.

Easy Rider and Dirty Harry, the two films that I see personify the up yours, non-conformist individualist anti-hero the best, and says what it should be to be an 'American' the strongest for me. None of this team building, group hugging, around-the-campfire, participation trophy, 'we' crap. Every film before and after is just a pale second, if that.

Paint Your Wagon.
Any movie that features Clint Eastwood singing has to be on this list.

Lee Marvin's song 'Wandering Star' was No. 1 in England for 16 weeks. This inspired his friend Lee Van Cleef (the King of the Spaghetti Westerns) to demand that he must have a song in one of his movies. Thence the movie 'Captain Apache'.
And from left-field... lets put the all black cast film 'Cabin in the Sky' in contention. Louise Armstrong, Lena Horne, Ethel Waters, angels, devils, tap dancing, jazz, a church hymn, a revolver, a tornado, temptation, redemption; a beautiful if neglected film.
