Koenig got the role of Chekov because he resembled Davy Jones of the Monkees (appealing to a younger crowd). The role itself was created after the first season, the Soviet Communist Party complained of the lack of Russian representation on a supposedly international ship's crew.

It was a standin for Takei who was shooting the Green Berets with John Wayne for half the season. Then he got back and both stayed.
