add this to the list of movies that could never be made today

re-watched it over the weekend. some really funny scenes -- most involving the Hanson brothers.

the scene where they have the brawl BEFORE the national anthem is LOL.

a fun period piece also -- the fashion, cars, social attitudes etc.

A buddy and I had a pair of season tickets for the WHA Minnesota Fighting Saints. At times, all three Carlson brothers were on the team. I loved the Saints!

ETA: When “Slap Shot” was filmed Jack Carlson was with the Saints so didn’t appear in the movie.

“The Carlson brothers a.k.a. the Hanson Brothers are the ice hockey playing siblings from the 1977 movie "Slap Shot" and "Slap Shot 2". The characters are based on three brothers who were actual hockey players; two of which starred in the film.

The real-life inspirations for the Hanson Brothers are Jeff Carlson (born July 20, 1953), Jack Carlson (born August 23, 1954), and Steve Carlson (born August 26, 1955). The brothers were all born in Virginia, Minnesota and first played together on the Marquette Iron Rangers hockey team in Marquette, Michigan…”

Something about Lindsay Crouse's girl-next-door look in that movie.

Some (all?) of the hockey scenes were filmed in what was then called the War Memorial in Syracuse NY. I used to live half an hour south of the city, I remember seeing that on the news.

True confession: I've never seen the movie.

That's an all time classic that I have watched several times. I'm usually a one and done with movies no matter how much I enjoyed them but this one falls into a different category.

Love the "Hansen Brothers" in that movie. Thanks for the background, did not know that.

As a kid, my dad brought me the St. Paul Civic center to watch the Fighting Saints.
Very fond memories.

The stories told by the players themselves is a great history lesson of the team.

Interesting interview with Dave Hanson on filming of the movie.
After filming of the movie, they were offered a 7 year movie contract.
They said “naw, we want to be hockey players”.
