If this is well-written, we may just see Heath Ledger dethroned as the best live-action Joker. https://youtu.be/t433PEQGErc "I'm yet another resource-consuming kid in an overpopulated planet raised to an alarming extent by Hollywood and Madison Avenue, poised with my cynical and alienated peers to take over the world when you're old and weak!" - Calvin, "Calvin & Hobbes"

Possibly. But he's got some big (floppy clown) shoes to fill. Still... Couldn't be any worse than Leto.

Looks very strange and not at all comic-book-villain-ish to me. Which is probably why I'll like it, I'm not a fan of comic-book heroes and villains everything right now in the movies. It's getting overdone if you ask me.

The reason why Ledger nailed the Joker was because he was able to capture that place between comic book villain and real live psychopath. He captured anarchy so to speak. The new film seems to lose the comic book villain aspect and honestly I don’t like that as the trailers seem to almost give off a serial killer John Wayne Gacy feel and while that might technically end up being a very good take on the character and possible a very good film I don’t think it will be fun or necessarily “enjoyable” if you will. I am probably not articulating this well. "Guns are tools. The only weapon ever created was man."

The Joker has had a number of different origin stories over the years, not all of which were "over the top comic book villain-ish". Like the version presented in the famous "The Killing Joke" storyline. That had the Joker as just an ordinary schlub who was driven off the deep end by an avalanche of unfortunate events (the failure of his lifelong dream of being a comedian, bankruptcy, the death of his wife and baby, plus beating and disfigurement), which seems to be what they're going for with this film.

Wife and I watched the Ledger version a couple weeks ago. We were both wondering if those on the other side of the camera(s) realized what they were seeing/filming - especially when the hospital done blowed up. Life moves pretty fast. Great cast, and director Todd Phillips is great. I usually enjoy his work.

Did she call him Arthur? I always thought they never disclosed the Joker's name? _____________

In the film, his real name is Arthur Fleck. There have been a few incarnations of the Joker whose real name was Jack Napier. But in most versions, his real name is never given.

Heath Ledger’s Joker was made more iconic and legendary due to it being his last role. That being said it certianly was iconic and legendary! He created a real person with tics and weirdness (the lip licking) Watching that movie I honestly don’t “see” Heath Ledger. With the make up, costume, tics, hunch back walking, etc. I only see “The Joker”

I swear I had something for this |
Due to my job, I spent Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday learning about emotionally disturbed people, mental diseases, suicide prevention, and pharmaceutical side effects. During this, the teaser for Joker came out and freaked the hell out of me. Not only does this guy show signs of mental illness and autism, Joaquin Phoenix DIVES head first into the role. This picture hit me harder during this trailer than anything else: If I hadn't gone to this class, I would have completely skipped over this.

I am curious to see what comes of this. I don't think it is intended to be a comic book movie in the general sense. As he tells it, a few years ago Phoenix had the idea of taking a character out of a comic book, and doing a character study, low budget, drama type movie; but maybe the character is a villain. That is part of what convinced him to take on this role. This should be an interesting twist we haven't yet seen in the comic book world in cinema. It will most certainly be highly scrutinized due to Ledger's outstanding portrayal, but as a stand alone movie, it has potential to be very good. Phoenix has proven himself to be a very good actor over the years, I think.

Looks like it has the most promise of the current crop of the DC universe. I did think that Wonderwoman was fun though. _________________________ An unarmed man can only flee from evil and evil is not overcome by fleeing from it. - Col Jeff Cooper NRA Life Member Long Live the Super Thirty-Eight

This looks completely unwatchable to me but I'm probably alone in that sentiment, I didn't see "Her" either.

The problem is the timing of the release. Phoenix is playing a different and older Joker, while Jared Leto is coming back as the younger Joker in the Suicide Squad sequel. That is going to dilute the character or the Joker "brand". This film would work much better if they have the patience to develop the franchise. With Affleck now gone, someone new is going to play Batman. All these casting changes make it harder for fans to get acquainted with the characters. Marvel did it right with Logan. After a long run for Jackman, Logan serves as the farewell for his beloved iteration of the character.

Every time I think of the Joker I see Caesar Romero. I'm sure his version is considered lame and cheesy compared to the dark and edgy super crazy Jokers but it's still my favorite version. No one's life, liberty or property is safe while the legislature is in session.- Mark Twain

Well, to be fair, the whole show was lame and cheesy compared to the newer Batman movies. Hell, even the Keaton version was more serious than the series. But comparing them is a disservice to the show. It was created in a different time for a different demographic. I grew up watching the series and fondly remember it.
