How does she like "dark"? Since someone suggested No Country For Old Men, I'll chime in with Steig Larsson's Millennium Trilogy. The 6 hour Swedish miniseries is true to the books telling the entire story unlike the short Daniel Craig theatrical movie.

Thanks for the suggestions, all! Please keep in mind that this is for my 82-year-old mother-in-law. The Expanse: She loves sci-fi, but hasn't seen it. Definitely worth considering. Raise the Titanic: I remember that movie, thought I haven't seen it, thinking it was pseudo-documentary. I'll have to check that out myself. Louis L'Amour: Conagher seems like a natural fit here; I loved that book. But I don't know if she likes westerns. She definitely loves Sam Elliott, though. Longmire: I don't know if she's seen it, but I'll keep it in mind - great suggestion. Shogun: I loved this myself 30 years ago, and would love to read it again someday. I'll run it past her. I have watched both mini-series. She loves Asian art. Lonesome Dove: Great suggestion, but I don't know if she'll like westerns. She loves Robert DuVall though. Spencer/Jesse Stone: Great suggestions. Poirot: Yes, I understood but didn't communicate clearly. Millennium Series: Interesting suggestion. I'll run it past her. Phone's ringing, Dude.

That's fascinating! I remember the movie, but thought it was semi-documentary, so I never watched it. I'll definitely have to check it out now.

Would Master and Commander Far Side of the World work? Too bad its one movie but I believe its a series of books. It stars Russel Crowe. Let all Men know thee, but no man know thee thoroughly: Men freely ford that see the shallows. Benjamin Franklin

Not a bad suggestion - does it get really technical about seafaring?

I'm on my 3rd read through on it. There's some character swaps between the TV series & the books, but follows pretty well. Better than most TV adaptations, IMO. The Enemy's gate is down.

There are a lot of Harlan Coben books made into series on Netflix and Prime. They are all kind of mystery thrillers with some twists. https://www.whats-on-netflix.c...d-whats-coming-soon/ ———————————————— The world's not perfect, but it's not that bad. I read the Lew Archer series by Ross McDonald when I was a teenager. Len Deighton had some good cold war spy books. Does your mom like guns? Mack Bolan was pretty prolific. Without irony I suggest Nancy Drew. Most of those were pretty good. Horatio Hornblower also held my interest "It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye". The Little Prince, Antoine de Saint-Exupery, pilot and author, lost on mission, July 1944, Med Theatre.

A lot of really great suggestions, all. Thanks! Probably a no on gun fiction like Bolan. But I might like them. How have you liked Len Deighton, mr Kablammo (or others)? Phone's ringing, Dude.

Rather than just copy a bunch of books and movies from this site, let me just link it. Many classic books have been made into great movies. Many not-so-classic books have as well. Justified would technically qualify since it got its start from a short story. For me, this is one of the all time best TV series.

I have yet to finish Contact by Carl Sagan although I rewatch the movie regularly. Andy Weir wrote The Martian. The audio book version is very well done by R.C. Bray. The movie has the worst music ever.

Since Longmire was mentioned, I'll suggest the audio books. I loved the series, but I also love the audio books. The narrator is perfectly cast. Along the same genre is Dark Winds, adapted from the Hillerman Navajo books featuring Joe Leaphorn, Jim Cree and Bernadette Manuelito. Not from a book (that I'm aware of) is the Yellowstone series. Maybe a bit violent if she wouldn't like Reacher, but for some reason, I like the dynamic portrayed between the ranchers, city folk, and the red man. This is also one of the reasons I liked Longmire and Dark Winds. Thus the metric system did not really catch on in the States, unless you count the increasing popularity of the nine-millimeter bullet. - Dave Barry "Never go through life saying 'I should have'..." - quote from the 9/11 Boatlift Story (thanks, sdy for posting it)

I admit I never read the books but really enjoyed the movie. I am sure there are some seafaring terms but I am sure they would be easily understood. Let all Men know thee, but no man know thee thoroughly: Men freely ford that see the shallows. Benjamin Franklin

Maybe this is played, but what about Stephen King? Dolores Claiborne, for example? Misery? Shawshank? She may very well have already seen them, but both books and movies are well done and can while away a few hours.. __________________________ "Trust, but verify."

The Silo series ("Wool" specifically) by Hugh Howey is decent. The show is on AppleTV, although the books split from the show in some fairly significant ways. ____________________ I Like Guns and stuff
