Fly High, A.J. |
O.K., so this weekend I got a chance to watch one of my guilty pleasures, "Heartbreak Ridge." Afterward, I got to thinking, which platoon sergeant would I rather serve under: Highway or Hartman? Personally, I'd take Highway. Seems like a guy you could drink a beer and swap stories with but could still kick some tail. I actually worked for a 1Sgt (Army) who was a real deal, hard as nails, Vietnam era Special Forces soldier. I lived in fear of him but would have followed him into hell in a gasoline soaked suit. What say you?

Hard to say since they were in different roles (DS vs. a Recon PSG). We don't know what PSG Hartman would have been like, could have been either a caustic A-hole or great. I suspect he would have been a good leader in the PSG role, hard but fair, and a lot of fun at times. “People have to really suffer before they can risk doing what they love.” –Chuck Palahnuik Be harder to kill: https://preparefit.ck.page

The Geeky 2nd LT in "Heartbreak Ridge", Boyd Gaines, is a friend of ours. Haven't seen him in several years though, busy with Broadway shows. Very gifted fellow.

I worked for a platoon leader who was that guy's twin in every respect. Good times. _____________________________ 'I'm pretty fly for a white guy'.

When I tell you move, you'll move fast. When I tell you to jump, you're gonna say, "How high?" And make no mistake. I don't care where you come from, I don't care what color you are, I don't care how smart you are, I don't care how dumb you are, 'cause I'm gonna teach every last one of you how to eat, sleep, walk, talk, shoot, shit like a United States soldier. Understand? What am I doing? I'm talking to an empty telephone

Gunny Hartman was more true to the USMC DI, obviously because he was one! I did like Gunny Highway, but his theatrics in the movie was just that, theatrics. Good movie, just not true life. I served in the USMC and at one time, had a Platoon Sgt kind of like Gunny Hartman. Tough as nails SOB.....but could hang out with the rest of us. No one, I mean no one, gave him shit! Not that he was the "I'm a bad ass" type of guy, it's just that his demeanor earned him a lot of respect. You got a good idea of Hartman in the field if you watch "Siege of Firebase Gloria:"
