Staring back from the abyss |
I hate to beat a dead horse, but this song is incredible. I heard it again today for probably the thousandth time and I never tire of it. The passion and anger in his interpretation, the haunting piano, the strings,...Good Lord. I've heard that Paul Simon, himself a musical genius, has said that Disturbed now owns this song. High praise. It's one of the best pieces of music ever recorded IMO. Turn out the lights, close your eyes, crank the volume, sing along, and enjoy. ________________________________________________________ "Great danger lies in the notion that we can reason with evil." Yup, it’s one of the best covers I ever heard. He captures the song like no other. _____________________________ Pledge allegiance or pack your bag! The problem with Socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money. - Margaret Thatcher Spread my work ethic, not my wealth

His Royal Hiney |
It's not bad but, for me, it lacks the haunting quality of the voices in the original. "It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Great song - my favorite version is when Myles Kennedy sings alongside Draiman from Disturbed. Myles’ vocal range is one of, if not the best out there in my opinion. Disturbed w/Myles Kennedy Sorry, I never remember the method to embed the video directly.

Part of the beauty of Simon and Garfunkel was their ability to harmonize. Truly remarkable and yes, at times, haunting. This is an entirely different interpretation of the song and lyrics, and I think better than the original. To me, it just brings out the soul of the song far better than S&G ever did. It just gives me goose bumps. And I'm a yuge fan of S&G, particularly Art. He has one of the best voices in the history of music. ________________________________________________________ "Great danger lies in the notion that we can reason with evil." Doug Patton.

Three Generations of Service |
I listened to the duet version this morning with a decent set of headphones (Sennheiser) but without my hearing aids and I was all "Meh..." I just re-listened to it with my hearing aids in and I'm much more impressed, but the solo Disturbed version is still better IMHO. Much more visceral. Some of it, I'm sure, is the brilliant visuals in the video. I too am a huge Simon and Garfunkel fan but Disturbed just KILLS this song. I've thought that since the first time I heard it a couple of years ago. Be careful when following the masses. Sometimes the M is silent.

I see this same thing said about Johnny Cash's cover of NIN Hurt. I don't think either of them actually said that but they did express how much they liked the covers. That's at least from the articles I've read on reaction to both songs by the original artists. Anyhow, if you missed the live version on Conan, it's worth a listen. It's the version that Paul Simon commented on IIRC. These go to eleven.

At the beginning of the song David has the voice of an angel, then changes to the voice of an angel full of wrath. I love this cover of the song.

I must be the only one or I am musically ignorant but, I cannot stand one note of the Disturbed cover. The original, “meh”.

Here it is in different perspective. Elizabeth Zharoff is a genuine opera singer, talent coach, voice over actor, etc etc etc. Not your typical fake reaction video youtuber. I first saw this video about 2 years ago and have since enjoyed her explanations of what and why is happening in a performance. Enjoy

Draiman has an incredibly voice and while I respect what he's done with Disturbed, I wish that there was more stuff that showcased his range.

OKCGene, Thanks for posting that Elizabeth Zharoff evaluation / reaction. Her comments really add to the listening experience of Draiman's cover here. Certifiable member of the gun toting, septuagenarian, bucket list workin', crazed retiree, bald is beautiful club! USN (RET), COTEP #192

I don't really care for Disturbed, but they killed it with their cover of this song. I think David Draiman has one of the most powerful voices in music, and he gets a chance to really let it rip in the Sound of Silence. The version with Miles Kennedy is even better, it captures some of the harmonization of the original and combines it with the raw power of Disturbed's version of the song. It's one of those songs that reverbrates inside and gives me chills every time I hear it. "The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people." "Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy." "I did," said Ford, "it is." "So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?" "It honestly doesn't occur to them. They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates the government they want." "You mean they actually vote for the lizards." "Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course." "But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?" "Because if they didn't vote for a lizard, then the wrong lizard might get in."

Simon and Garfunkel warned us. Disturbed are furious that we didn't listen. I hate offended people. They come in two flavours - huffy and whiny - and it's hard to know which is worst. The huffy ones are self-important, narcissistic authoritarians in love with the sound of their own booming disapproval, while the whiny, sparrowlike ones are so annoying and sickly and ill-equipped for life on Earth you just want to smack them round the head until they stop crying and grow up. - Charlie Brooker
