HOMICIDE: LIFE ON the Street may be on the verge of abdicating the title of the Best TV Show You Can’t Stream.

On Monday night, David Simon — whose nonfiction book, Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets, inspired the Emmy-winning NBC cop drama, and eventually launched Simon’s own acclaimed career in television with shows like The Wire and The Deuce — revealed that the biggest hurdle had been cleared to put the series on a streaming platform:

Really good show.

An observation of mine from 2019:

...Homicide: Life on the Street, which IMO is the best police drama ever, by far. This series was contemporary to NYPD Blue, and while I was a big fan of both shows and while I dearly love Dennis Franz in NYPD Blue, that show was unrealistic. The detectives in NYPD Blue wrapped up cases PDQ every episode, before the last commercial break. Criminals just poured their hearts out to the police in that show. Poured their hearts out, confessed crimes, etc, or the perfect witness came forth and all the pieces just dropped into place. Very unrealistic. In the very first episode of Homicide: Life on the Street, Detective Bayliss had a case of a murdered child, Adena Watson. They never solved that case through the entire series. A couple of seasons into the series, they had a suspect in interrogation at one point and you said to yourself "OK, so this is the guy." Nope. Maybe he did it, maybe he didn't, but he walked. Now that is realistic. The detective squad of NYPD Blue never had an unsolved case, and that's just BS.

The fate of Luther Mahoney. I don't want to ruin it for anyone who hasn't seen the series, but... Cool

Yes, a damn good drama series, period, police show or no.

And, of course, Andre Braugher as Detective Pembleton- one of my very favorite portrayals in all my decades of watching TV shows.

From Variety Magazine:

NBC's "Homicide: Life on the Street," one of the most critically acclaimed network series of all time, is finally making its way to streaming and will debut Aug. 19 on Peacock. The series and TV movie have been remastered to HD and 4K for the first time.

It's hard to believe it's been off the air for 25 years already.

An episode a day on the treadmill has been fantastically enjoyable!

Because the series never went into indication, I’ve seeing most of these episodes for maybe the second and in some cases the first time.

The writing, the dialogue, everything holds up.

Interesting watching them perform work on regular typewriter, stopping payphones to answer pages, and in a recent episode watching a detective argue that the most information a piece of “hair“ an offer is maybe the race of the person, but that’s about it. (Have to wonder how much sooner after these episodes DNA technology came into being)

Anyway, if you were on the fence as to whether to begin this series for the first time or revisit for a second, the noncommercial subscription to Peacock has been absolutely worth it. I’ll likely cancel after I’m done with this series.

We're on the final season, and yes, it has been great. A little preachy at times (thank you, NBC), and Bayliss turns total flake late in the series.

I was never sure why Joe Polito left the show. He was one of my favorite character actors, particularly in Coen Brothers movies like Miller's Crossing.

From Wiki:

The show was rating poorly and the producers were under pressure from NBC to include a new female character (Megan Russert) in the hope of gaining broader appeal. As a result, they decided to write out Polito's character at the end of Season 2. Fontana assured him that he would be brought back later in the season, but Polito was unhappy and criticized the producers publicly, an action he later said that he regretted.[4] The outburst caused a rift with Fontana,[1] and the Crosetti character was killed off early in Season 3, with the explanation that the detective had committed suicide. This further infuriated Polito, who again complained to the media, triggering a public dispute with Fontana. Interviewed about the situation in 2005, Polito expressed regret for his handling of the matter. He said that he and Fontana had subsequently reconciled, and as a result the Crosetti character returned to make a farewell appearance as a spirit in Homicide: The Movie.[4][5]
