recently watched this classic WW2 film about a sub crew -- Burt Lancaster and Clark Gable

great story and I enjoyed it immensely

it's on Amazon Prime streaming now if anyone is interested

I think it pays a tremendous tribute to the bravery of that type of unique naval warrior

An actual WWII submarine officer wrote the book the movie is based on. Commander Edward L. Beach.
Great movie!

It's the first book in a trilogy:

Run Silent, Run Deep
Dust on the Sea
Cold is the Sea

the 2nd book also takes place in WWII, while the events of the 3rd book are during the cold war after the transition to nuclear powered subs. All three are really good reads.

The Star Trek episode "Balance of Terror" is based on this movie. Just sayin', in case anyone is also into Star Trek.

The Enemy Below is also a good WW II sub film IMO. Robert Mitchum and Curt Jürgens, both honorable men.

When I was at the Naval Academy he gave a speech and I still have an autographed copy of History of the US Navy 200 years.

I felt honored to meet him. Run Silent Run De Erie’s is great reading.

The submarine used in filming was the USS Redfish (SS395). My father was a plankowner and did 2 war patrols on her. I’ve seen that movie maybe a thousand times Smile

A bit of drift - the Redfish was also used as the Nautilus in Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea

Watched the movie (again) last night. One of the things I like about it is that it's focused. All action. No multiple story lines or irrelevant romantic subplots.

Also, thanks for the leads on other E.L. Beach books. Didn't know they were out there, ordered both from Amazon.
