One of my favorites are the Hillbilly Thomists - a group composed of Dominican priests and seminarians.

the Traveling McCoury's were in town last night,

over 90 minutes of bluegrass, new grass, and some Rock in Roll type covers,

fantastic show, and we have tickets to see most of them, with Del, in october

FWIW, the Traveling McCoury's are Del McCoury's 2 sons, and most of his backing band,

and Ronnie has a very versatile voice, he can sound just like Del, and then get a bit lower for other songs,

This is merely a joke to bookmark this thread. Plenty other real bluegrass to share later.

This song reminds me of the loss of my best friend a decade ago. He still speaks to me in various ways through nature.

Enough with my depressing bluegrass posts tonight. Somebody pick it up on a positive note. lyman?

I'm not sure if Mandolin Orange (now called Watchhouse) qualifies as Bluegrass, but the mandolin in that last video reminded me of this great song by them.

Classic Bluegrass. Jerry Garcia on banjo, Vassar Clements on fiddle, Peter Rowan on guitar, David Grisman on mandolin, and John Kahn on bass.

Right on time TMats. Old & In The Way is what I heard them say.

Ever been to Telluride? All the way from NC. I have been twice so far. Peter Rowan is certainly a favorite.

How about Free Mexican Airforce? Howdy!

Bluegrass has been in a near-constant tension of tradition and novelty, for many many years. The commercial rejection of "new grass" and the near-worship of Mr. Monroe and Mssrs Flatt & Scruggs create a monotonous repetition of tunes that over time, leave us wanting more.

I listen to Billy Strings, who truly studies the past, who truly values the past, but who goes far beyond. I wish him well.

New Grass Revival, Bela Fleck, and many others who remain creative and not conditioned to play only the standards can be heard on SiriusXM Bluegrass Junction. I enjoy listening to those.

Some bands, who recast rock anthems, make me realize how wonderful those songs are. The acoustic versions are stellar.

And, I still feel a sense of joy when Duelin' Banjos comes on, or Uncle Pen, or one of the many "I killed my girlfriend and now I'm gonna die" songs. There is nothing like a traditional song.

4MUL8R -

You know of what you speak. NGR is in my top five all time bands across all genres.

If you like Billy, and have not seen this absurdly talented and original HALLOWEEN show in Asheville, NC from last year, it is worthy of a watch. Lengthy two set show, but entertaining. My favorite traditional twist is Mummy's Not Dead at the 1:34:15 mark.

Lyman- Thanks for originally posting this.

I must have watched this 100 times in the past 5 years. It is shortcutted on my desktop. It was hard to consider at first, but eventually became reality without so much pain. Although I had to let her go for reasons other than another man (her family issues she had to resolve on her own), she realized who butters her bread and came back. This is a one FANTASTIC song that can draw a tear from most anyone facing the loss of a spouse.

Yeah, I have just once, and long ago, don’t remember who all was there.
