| Peace through superior firepower  |
Over the years, my admiration and love of this film has grown to the point that I now consider it the greatest film ever made- in any language. For me, no film can ever take the place of The Godfather as my favorite film, but, my God, David Lean's Lawrence of Arabia is a powerhouse. Sprawling and immensely entertaining, it has no equal as far as I'm concerned. Maurice Jarre's grand musical score- Lean's film would have been less with any other musical score. Jarre gets as close to perfection as is humanly possible, in my opinion. And without the performance of Peter O'Toole, I wouldn't be writing any of this. TCM is airing it right now | ||

They don't make'em like that any more. An all-time classic that has withstood the test of time. Historically, rather poignant considering what's happening in the Levant and it's ever evolving/changing landscape of tribes in conflict. | |||

Luckily, when it was first released in theaters, I saw it in the middle of the winter. Even then, I could still feel the heat when I left. | Edge seeking Sharp blade! |
I'm lucky to have seen some of the greatest films during their first theater runs. Lawrence of Arabia, Dr Zhivago, Godfather, The Longest Day, and a not great but notable Easy Rider. Peter O'Toole is one of my favorites, and he became Lawrence in this role. I can't watch Lawrence of Arabia too many times. | |||

| Something wild is loose  |
Movie inspired me to read "Seven Pillars of Wisdom," which is a sort of autobiography, and which I highly recommend. A complex man, in a complex time, in a complex region. And a complex movie that superbly condensed it, as much as a movie can. The book is also a very well written first-person telling of the events, one of which included an account by Lawrence of riding a camel in a charge against the Turks and the camel suddenly collapsing under him. He assumed it had taken a bullet from the Turkish line, but subsequently discovered he had shot it in the back of the head with his own revolver. This and other insights into Lawrence's life and personality made the movie real to me, and I believe O'Toole captured him perfectly. After reading this thread I remarked to my wife that I haven't seen this movie since I was a kid to which she replies she has never even seen this film. I know what we are doing this Saturday night. | |||

| Just because you can, doesn't mean you should |
Thanks for the reminder. I need to watch it again. I'm another one that saw it on the big screen as a kid but too young to really appreciate the story and the acting. That's an area and time in history that should have had more study in history when I went to school. A lot of today's problems trace back to that era. They have been in conflict in that part of the world so long that I doubt it will ever be peaceful. Religion, old grudges, changed borders and plenty of outsiders with their own agendas. ___________________________ Avoid buying ChiCom/CCP products whenever possible. | |||

I have never seen the complete film, and yet its still a favorite. Like Sand Pebbles or reading the book The Far Pavallions, its one of those time consuming enjoyable things you do on a saturday morning eating wheaties Used guns deserve a home too | |||

You should try and do that. If you want, Amazon has a two-disc set listed for about $10.65 and a single-disc for less than $10.
