Both are pretty great

Question:
Think about the films they made.

Choices:
John Ford was more skilled
Ron Howard is more skilled
If Ford had today's tech he would win
Ron has the edge because of the technology
They are too different for comparison
I have another option that beats them both
Nether are in my top five

Safety, Situational Awareness and proficiency.

I can't say whether I've even seen a John Ford movie and except for Solo: A Star Wars Story Ron Howard hasn't been relevant since 2009.

Someone asked Orson Welles to name the three greatest directors. He said "John Ford, John Ford and John Ford".

John Ford.

His work filming WWII puts him far above any modern director.

Clint doesn't have the body of work John Ford has but Flags Of Our Fathers and Letters From Iwo Jima might be all he needs to win this contest.

Rush and In the Heart of the Sea were both impressive, and the subject matter is certainly more interesting that Solo; I liked Solo too though.

John Ford. Love seeing Monument Valley. Ron Howard is not even close. Did see Ronny's first named role as a snotty nosed kid in The Journey circa 1959.

I like Howard's movies, but he isn't John Ford. Or Scorcese.

I can't say whether I've even seen a John Ford movie.

You are missing some great films such as: Stagecoach, The Searchers and a bunch of John Wayne films.

Really hard to compare them, imo. I think The Searchers is the best film either one of them directed. But I probably like Apollo 13 more than any others. Liberty Valance vs A Beautiful Mind... who knows?

But neither are in my top 5.

Orguss— Watch ‘The Quiet Man’. It’s a John Ford movie that stars Ireland with a great supporting cast.

Amen to that. Nobody is Stanley. That got damn guy was such a genius that even Spielberg (think old Spielberg before his recent bullshit) couldn’t comprehend 2001 until years later when they put it back out for a 2nd run at the theater.

Kubrick crossed genres. Made the best war movie ever made (to me at least), the best horror film, the best space film (given the time it was released), the best gang film (by far) and was not afraid to tackle sex whether Lolita or Eyes Wide Shut, and made one of the best films I have ever seen, Barry Lyndon. To me there isn’t anyone that could touch Stanley Kubrick.

Howard has done some really outstanding films. Gung Ho, Night Shift, A Beautiful Mind, Apollo 13, Cocoon, Far and Away and Cinderella Man. He has a lot of work right now in development. So we’ll see if he can direct another outstanding film. It’s been a while. His Pavarotti doc was the last thing I’ve seen from him that I was impressed with.

For some reason when ever Ford is mentioned I'm reminded of the outside dance scene with Henry Fonda in "My Darling Clementine." Then I just discovered the one in "Fort Apache."

My vote goes to Ford. The list of films he directed (1917-1970) is loaded with memorable greats; "The Searchers", "The Quiet Man", "The Long Gray Line", and many more.

John Ford is One of the best of all time.

Although I give credit to Ron Howard for being one of the better modern directors.
