Nirvana comes on the Lithium channel on Sirius XM sometimes and that is the 2nd most listened to channel by me behind the Catholic Channel. Had Sirius for a few months now so had not really listened to Nirvana since the 90s until recently. I’ve always enjoyed Nirvana just not anything I sought out. Heard the Lithium DJ mention that the dude that is the kid from the album cover is suing Cobain’s Estate for child sex exploitation or something like that. I did not have a copy of the album and figured it was one I still enjoy so I bought a remastered copy and popped it onto the CD player in the truck. Man was I transported back. The sound on the remastered CD is so much better than the compressed Sirius XM feed from the app playing out of the company Tahoe. I did always wonder how they got away with that picture as the album cover. I actually owned the CD for about a day way back when. The album came out in 1991 and the whole buy 8 CDs for a penny, as long as you buy 3 more at FULL price, which their full price was usually $24.99 or $29.99, plus shipping that took nearly 2 months back then. I split one of those deals with my brother. Only albums I can remember of the whole lot were Nirvana Nevermind, R.E.M Automatic For The People, Genesis We Can’t Dance, Duran Duran The Wedding Album. The Duran Duran album did not come out until 1993 so I was 9 or 10 years old. Ordering was done from a little book of stickers and you peeled off a sticker of the album cover that was probably like .5”x.5” and put it on the post card order slip and mailed it in. So there was really no seeing the detail of the album cover. Well low and behold once the actual album arrived it was plain as day compared to the little sticker that there was a naked baby on the cover. My brother was 2 years older and we were like mom sure is not going to like this if she sees it so my brother sold the album to a buddy the next day at school. Why we just did not throw the album art away I don’t know. I also can’t for the life of me remember the music club that we bought from. Columbia House was the big one but we used a different one because you only had to buy 3 full priced albums compared to Columbia Houses 4. Anyone recall the names of any of those other music clubs? A $25 CD in 1992 would cost $48 today adjusted for inflation. Nearly $150 for 3 CDs back as a 9 year old was big money now that I look back at it. ———————————————— The world's not perfect, but it's not that bad. If we got each other, and that's all we have. You're a good dude, but that dichotomy of favorite stations made me chuckle just now. Then your story about your brother selling the record made me laugh even more. That's good stuff. Thanks for sharing the memory. I'm not making fun of you, btw. Good story...

BMG for the win! I used both Columbia House and BMG *WAY* back in the day but for vinyl. They merged in 2005 if this is correct: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Columbia_House Certifiable member of the gun toting, septuagenarian, bucket list workin', crazed retiree, bald is beautiful club! Arguably, there were two months in 1991 that changed the course of Rock music, when grunge hit and Metallica released their "Black Album" and redefined themselves in metal. I can only speak to Pearl Jam and Metallica, as those are the only two whose albums I actually bought and listened to when they were released. Of course, I listened to Nirvana, Guns n' Roses and the Red Hot Chili Peppers on the radio but have never to this day listened to a complete album from any of them. I remember their shows more than anything else. Well at least kinda remember... Being a bit older than most of that audience (but ironically about the same age as most of the actual performers), those local grunge/rock bands like Soundgarden, PJ, Nirvana, Tad, Alice in Chains, Screaming Trees and Mother Love Bone didn't have quite the same life-defining impact for me as they did for the rest of the crowd who were 7-10 years younger. But their music was still era-defining in the rock world and I did enjoy it and the times quite a lot. -MG

My other Sig is a Steyr. |
Another former BMG subscriber here. I got a whole bunch of records from them years ago. Somehow I decided to keep all. A few years ago I got a new turntable and started playing them again, buying more records... As for the CDs in the truck, I may be the only guy driving around playing Beethoven's 9th and Marilyn Manson's Coma White.

My listening tastes are all over the board and always have been. The Grateful Dead Channel would likely be my second if it played more studio stuff compared to the live stuff. I had XM Radio a year or so after it’s inception in the early 2000s. I bought an XM Radio for my Mustang for 6 months same as cash from Circuit City. I don’t recall how much the monthly subscription but I was just out of high school and thought it would be a good way to build credit. Back then there was a channel I believe called The Kiln. It played all the awesome hardcore, metal Christian Rock. I wish that station still existed. Wild how just the topic of music just floods back life memories. Does not even need to be a specific artist or song. Just the talk of music. As for actual CDs in the truck right now I have Conway Twitty’s Greatest Hits, NF Clouds, and Nirvana Nevermind. Then my streaming playlists are all over the place. ———————————————— The world's not perfect, but it's not that bad. If we got each other, and that's all we have. I actually have this currently on my car right now along with Live at the Paramount. Back then I was more into Jazz and only recently revived my interest. On the BMG subscription thing I was maybe 15 and thought it was a good deal. Got a bunch of 8-Tracks and ended up stiffing them on future full price purchases. I can still remember some of what I got > Jethro Tull, Cream, Bread, 3 Dog Night, Chicago, ELO and that's all I remember. I had no money and no way to pay for one at the real price. I hope this won't hit my credit score.

Not the only one. I got tons of CDs from BMG back in the day. Good stuff. ________________________________________ -- Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I enjoyed Nevermind when it came out. I actually have two copies of it, one with the extra, unlisted song at the end and one without. The extra song is pretty terrible. When In Utero came out all my pals loved it but I just couldn't get into it. I bought Bleach and it kinda sucked, too. Nevermind was just lightning in a bottle for them. Right sound at the exact right time, I guess. I'm going to have to go dig it out and give it a spin.

Ok. Now that Instagram post I seen the other day makes sense now that you mention the Nirvana cover kid suing. Someone posted the cover of the Van Halen album(don’t remember the name If the album) with the kid smoking a cigarette and calling the Nirvana kid a pussy.
