John Sayles is an independent film maker and writer who has written and directed some fine motion pictures. Among them are two favorites of mine- Lone Star from 1996, and Matewan from 1987.

Matewan is based upon real events and tells the story of the Battle of Matewan in Mingo County, West Virginia in 1920, stemming from a labor dispute between coal miners and their coal company employer.

The film stars Chris Cooper. Also featured are Mary McDonnell, James Earl Jones, David Straithairn, Kevin Tighe and Gordon Clapp.

Sayles wrote and directed the film, and if you've never seen it, here's your chance. It's well worth your time.
