There's an earlier documentary film called "Marwencol" that covered the true story behind this fictional take.

It's an interesting story.

Fair warning: The real life guy is a crossdresser. That's the reason he was attacked by that group of thugs, which left him brain-damaged and suffering from PTSD. That's covered in the documentary, including footage of him crossdressing, which he still does to this day. It's not clear from this trailer, but they may or may not include that part of the story in this film.
